I’ll be honest, I jumped on the Stranger Things series bandwagon way later than everyone else. I never watched it when it was recommended to me way back. However, when the last season was released, my niece and nephews literally coerced me into watching it. In the first episode itself, I was petrified like hell and literally closed my eyes and ears to avoid watching and hearing the growls and beasts.

However, somewhere between the Demogorgons, the Upside Down, the 80s era, Hawkins, and the Mind Flayer, I found myself completely invested in the friendships on screen. Undoubtedly, Stranger Things is a beautiful ode to friendship. Having cried during the final episode – and honestly, throughout the series – I realise we could all use those friendship lessons in our own lives.

You can’t Brush Aside These Friendship Lessons from the Stranger Things series

Let me get started. I hope you can relate to it.

Real Friends Show Up, No Matter What

Remember when Will went missing in the very first episode? I was like, “What is going to happen next?” But just when the adults were busy with search parties and police procedures, the trio – Mike, Dustin, and Lucas had their own plans.

They grabbed their bikes and flashlights without a second thought. Their friend needed them, and that was enough. Seriously, how often do we say we’ll “be there” for our friends but then truly “be there” when it actually matters?

These cute kids taught me that real friendship means showing up, even when it’s scary, inconvenient, or when you have no idea what you’re doing. And you can witness this pattern repeatedly throughout the series.

Friendship Means Accepting People Exactly as They Are

Let’s start with Eleven. When the gang found her, she could barely understand or speak, was unknown about her backstory, had superpowers, and came with more emotional baggage than anyone should have to carry. She was different in every possible way. And you know what they did? They immediately made her part of their group.

The Stranger Things series showed me that true friendship isn’t about finding people who are just like you. It’s about making space for people who aren’t. Even when Will shared that he was “different,” everyone embraced him for who he was.

In a world that’s constantly trying to make us all fit into neat little boxes, pass judgmental comments, watching this group embrace their differences reminded me that the best friendships are the ones where you can be your authentic, weird, messy self.

Sometimes Love Complicates Things (And That’s Okay)

If you’ve watched the Stranger Things series, you know that romance definitely enters the picture. Mike and Eleven. Lucas and Max. Steve-Nancy-Jonathan. And honestly, some of those moments got awkward and painful to watch.

But here’s what is the highlight for me – friendships survived despite the romantic complications. Sure, there was jealousy when El came between the group. Yes, there was tension when Lucas started dating Max. The boys definitely had their moments of being absolutely ridiculous about girls. Yet they worked through it.

They communicated (eventually), apologized when they messed up, and recognized that romantic relationships don’t have to mean the end of friendships. In fact, the show taught me that strong friendships can weather changing dynamics if everyone’s willing to put in the effort.

The Best Friendships Push You to Be Brave

I hands-down accept that I am not brave, and you might relate with my statement because I mentioned above – I couldn’t take the sound and look of a Demogorgon.

Trust me, if monsters started emerging from an alternate dimension in my town, I’d probably be on the first bus out of there. But watching the Stranger Things series, I realized that bravery isn’t about being fearless – it’s about being scared and doing it anyway because your friends need you.

Think about Steve’s arc. He went from being a stereotypical popular kid to literally fighting monsters with a nail bat – not once but throughout the series. Why? Because of his friendship with Dustin and, later, Robin. These relationships transformed him into someone willing to risk everything for the people he cared about.

That’s what good friends do. They don’t eliminate your fear, but they stand beside you so you don’t have to face it alone.

It’s Okay to Outgrow Some Friendships (But Not All)

One of the most realistic aspects of the Stranger Things series is watching how the group evolves as they get older. In later seasons, we see Mike struggling to balance his relationship with El and his friendships. We watch as high school creates new social dynamics and pressures.

There’s that heartbreaking moment when Mike and Will argue, and Will accuses Mike of not caring about the party anymore. It was extremely hurtful to watch, but we gotta admit that growing up does change friendship dynamics. People develop new interests and relationships, and sometimes you drift apart.

But here’s the beautiful part – the friendships that matter find a way to adapt. The show reminded me that while some friendships are for certain seasons of life, the truly special ones evolve with you. They might look different and require more effort to maintain, but they endure.

You Need Friends Who Tell You the Truth

Lucas doesn’t get enough credit for this, but he’s consistently been the voice of reason in the group. When everyone else was blindly trusting Eleven in the first season, Lucas asked the hard questions. He wasn’t being mean, but he was simply being honest about his concerns.

The Stranger Things series taught me that the best friends aren’t always the ones who tell you what you want to hear. Sometimes, they’re the ones brave enough to tell you what you need to hear.

Whether it’s calling out bad behavior, questioning questionable decisions, or just offering a reality check, honest friends are invaluable. Remember, the legendary line – “friends don’t lie.”

Loyalty Isn’t Blind – It’s Informed and Chosen

Here’s something that really struck me while watching Stranger Things: these kids are loyal to each other, but it’s not blind loyalty. They question each other, they disagree, and they even fight sometimes. But at the end of the day, they choose each other.

That choice matters. It’s easy to be loyal when everything’s going well. It’s much harder when your friend makes mistakes, hurts you, or when sticking by them comes at a personal cost. Throughout the series, we see the group face these moments again and again, and they consistently choose their friendship.

The Final Lesson: Friendship Is Worth Fighting For

If the Stranger Things series has taught me anything, it’s that friendship – real, deep, meaningful friendship – is worth fighting for. Fighting monsters (obviously), fighting through misunderstandings, distance, change, and all the ordinary challenges that threaten to pull people apart.

In our hyperconnected world, where we have hundreds of social media “friends,” the show reminds us what friendship actually means. It’s Mike staying by Will’s side at the hospital. It’s Dustin and Steve’s unlikely but beautiful bond. It’s Max opening up to the group about her trauma. It’s all of them, again and again, choosing each other.

On a parting note…

So yeah, more than the whole supernatural thrills, the Stranger Things series kept me hooked with the awesome friendship lessons. The series reminded me to be the kind of friend who shows up, accepts people as they are, tells the truth even when it’s hard, and fights for the relationships that matter.

And maybe, just maybe, it inspired me to be a little braver in my own friendships. However, I am in no mood to deal with Demogorgons, for sure. Pssst, a golden advice – don’t miss the recent documentary titled “One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5.”

The third season of the Panchayat series is out on Amazon Prime, and the fun rollercoaster ride is on. The series that made me laugh and cry at times is back. I watched the third season in just two days.

TVF (The Viral Fever) has yet again done an outstanding job with this series, which follows the journey of Abhishek Tripathi, who was once reluctant to come to this small village but, with time, becomes an integral part of it.

I want to mention that I started watching the third season again with my sister because I simply couldn’t get over this series. It is so good. However, I realized that the narrative is full of life lessons.

Embrace new experiences with an open mind

Abhishek initially struggles with his placement in Phulera. Obviously, he is an urban lad and has left behind a lot of comforts. However, as he begins to adapt, he realizes that embracing new experiences can lead to personal growth.

Thus, the Panchayat series teaches us to step out of our comfort zones and see the world through different lenses. Be open to unfamiliar adventures. Show a willingness to embrace change, as this change can lead to unexpected opportunities and a deeper understanding of life.

Unity is the best policy

Be it any problem, the entire team—from Sachiv ji (Jitendra Kumar), Vikas (Chandan Roy) to Pradhan ji (Neena Gupta—Raghubir Yadav) and Prahladcha (Faisal Malik)—tackles the problems together. If anyone goes wrong, they mend ways, make the person realize their mistake, but eventually all come together. Even the Vidhayak (Pankaj Jha) couldn’t break this unity.

In a world that often feels fragmented, the series underscores the value of being connected and supportive of those around us.

There is no option other than being resilient

Abhishek, aka Sachiv ji’s journey, is undoubtedly one of resilience and perseverance. Throughout the series, he has faced immense problems, from adjusting to rural life to dealing with bureaucratic hurdles.

Yet he learns to navigate and overcome obstacles. Thus, the Panchayat series teaches us the value of resilience, highlighting that persistence and determination can help us overcome even the most daunting challenges.

Not only Abhishek but also the cute amma (Abha Sharma) teaches us to be resilient if we wish to achieve our dreams.  

Finding joy in simple things

I personally loved the simplicity of Phulera. Undoubtedly, there is a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of city life. I can relate to this because visiting my native place during summer vacation was a constant affair. Life in the rural areas is mind-boggling yet calming.

The villagers find joy in simple pleasures; their contentment is a powerful lesson in appreciating what we have. Thus, this series encourages viewers to find happiness in the small things and recognize that contentment often comes from within rather than from material possessions or external achievements.

The people of Phulera have no cars, lavish houses, or swanky phones, but they are happy. They are content with their simple lives.

Caring for the well-being of others

Though the members have their occasional tiffs and disagreements, they never stop caring for each other. For instance, Prahladcha lost his son, and everyone knows how addicted he is to alcohol.

So, Vikas and Pradhanji take it upon themselves to help him deal with this crisis. They cook for him, and Vikas even mends his khaat (bed) because he cares for him. Besides, the entire village sympathizes with him and takes care of him.

The importance of humor

One of the standout features of Panchayat series is its light-hearted humor. The series uses wit and comedy to tackle serious issues, making them more relatable and less overwhelming. At times, when I heard the silly jokes and saw the secret laughter shared by the characters, it instantly brought a big smile to my face.

I think that’s what the series is aiming for. You should always keep smiling no matter what. A sense of humor can be a powerful coping mechanism.

Empathy and understanding

Throughout the series, Abhishek learns to empathize with the villagers and understand their perspectives and problems. For example, when Ammaji desperately wants a pakka (cement) house, he first gets angry but understands her perspective and shows her how to deal with it.

Due to his empathetic nature, he fosters mutual respect and collaboration. Panchayat series emphasizes the importance of understanding others’ viewpoints and the need for empathy in building strong, harmonious relationships. It reminds us that compassion and patience can bridge divides and create more inclusive communities.

Is shelter necessary than your loved ones?

As mentioned above, Ammaji desperately wants pakka house, and for that, she pretends to be alienated from her family. She desperately convinces Abhishek to give her house under the Prime Minister’s housing scheme.

Amidst this, she falls ill, but she is determined not to seek help from her son because she wants to show how lonely she is—to have the Pakka house.

But later in the series, you must see how Prahlad changes her viewpoint. I want you to witness it because my words cannot suffice to convey the emotions.  

You must never believe hearsay

Bhushan (played by the super talented Durgesh Kumar) and his wife Kranti Devi Sharma (Sunita Rajwar), along with his sidekicks Binod (Ashok Pathak) and Madhav (Bulloo Kumar), continue praising the MLA Chandrakishore Singh to ensure he helps them in the Panchayat elections.

In the process, the MLA never considers that he might be investing in the wrong people and thoroughly believes in hearsay. Due to this, he is always branded as “bad” in the series. He teaches an important lesson: if you don’t make sound decisions, you risk losing both assets and respect.

Protect your loved one no matter what

In many instances, external forces try to attack the loyal “Panchayat” group, but unitedly they defeat them all. The way they extend protection even to the pigeon owner is something you must watch for yourself. Additionally, don’t miss out on the last episode – it deserves all the praise.

Through its characters and their experiences, the series imparts valuable insights into embracing new experiences, valuing community, finding contentment in simplicity, and so much more. I hope the movies and web series I’m about to list excite you. Well, I am including both titles – I’ve already enjoyed them and am looking forward to some. Nevertheless, I so want to share it with the world.

What To Watch On OTT This Weekend?

1.      To Kill a Tiger

It takes courage as a rape victim to speak out in public, especially when you are a teenager. Yes, this Canadian Hindi-language documentary film revolves around a family living in Jharkhand and their pursuit for justice after their teenage daughter is brutally gang-raped.

The series follows the shots of the girl, the struggles of her family, and finally, their fight coming to an end. The most heartwarming scene is when the father announces that they WON. I am damn sure it will bring tears to your eyes. You need courage to come out in the open and fight against evil. This documentary captures that essence – no wonder it was nominated for Oscar.

2.      3 Body Problem

Physics was never my favorite subject, but this series has captivated me. It revolves around Ye Wenjie, an astrophysicist whose expertise secures her a position at a secret military base. Unwittingly, she makes a decision that becomes a colossal threat to humanity.

The narrative unfolds around this critical decision and how the scientists strive to counteract its potentially disastrous effects. I’m halfway through the series and plan to finish it by the weekend. So far, it has been fascinating.

3.      Queens

Wildlife documentaries are my absolute favorite to watch. I can binge-watch them endlessly and never tire of their captivating content. If you share this passion, then you must watch “Queens,” narrated by Angela Bassett. The series finale is particularly mesmerizing, spotlighting all the women behind the camera. It’s an inspiring tribute that’s sure to leave you feeling motivated.

4.      Damsel

The title may suggest that this damsel is in distress, but trust me, she doesn’t need rescuing. She is more than capable of fighting any battle. That’s the essence of the movie. I’ve seen Millie Bobby Brown’s performance in Enola Holmes and wasn’t overly impressed.

However, this film completely changed my perspective. Her action sequences are incredibly powerful, and her acting is simply outstanding. Although the movie has received mixed reviews, I personally adored it for its compelling story. So, I highly recommend giving it a watch.

5.      Sunflower

India is home to many talented comedians, but Sunil Grover holds a special place among them for me. His comic timing and talent truly stand out. You can witness this brilliance in his web series “Sunflower.”

Thanks to my brother, I watched the first season and have been eagerly awaiting the second. Believe me, season 2 is just as intriguing as the first. Watch it for Sunil Grover – even if you’re not already a fan, it doesn’t really matter! You’re likely to appreciate his performance regardless.

6.      The Kerala Story

I understand that recommending this film might stir controversy and be sensitive for some. However, I encourage watching it for the exceptional acting. For those who have endured similar hardships in real life, the depiction resonates deeply, as it’s far from a bed of roses. The portrayal is raw and highlights the painful realities, offering a profound perspective.

7.      Big Girls Don’t Cry

I often miss my school days, though they weren’t as eventful as depicted in “Big Girls Don’t Cry.” I had hoped that 2024 would bring stories that truly represent the struggles of the younger generation, and this web series does exactly that.

It aesthetically portrays the myriad struggles of teenage girls, encompassing their sexuality, love lives, power struggles, academic challenges, and much more. Impressively, the series maintains its engagement and pace throughout, and the direction is beautifully executed.

8.      Love Storiyan

If you’re a romantic like me, this series is an absolute must-watch. Each story featured within it has the power to melt your heart.

Romance is not always easy; it often requires making difficult decisions for the sake of a beautiful future. Couples who navigate through challenges and come out stronger on the other side are the true heroes of these tales.

9.      Merry Christmas

I am a little biased towards Vijay Sethupathi, and so I am recommending this film. But jokes apart, it takes a lot of patience to understand the film directed by Sriram Raghavan.

Probably, that is the reason why this film did not perform well at the box office. However, I highly recommend watching this film. I am surprised by Katrina’s acting. She isn’t just dolled up; she actually acts! Till the end, the story will keep you hooked.

Series/Movies You Must Avoid

The following are the movies and series that I believe are the worst ones. Literally, I wasted my time on them, and they turned out to be dud like ever!

• Ae Watan Mere Watan – Sara Ali Khan’s performance in this film is unfortunately not up to the mark. The acting, dialogue, and direction all contribute to a lackluster experience. It might be best to skip this one.
• Indian Police Force – This action web series by Rohit Shetty features exaggerated action sequences that could have been exciting but are let down by lackluster acting, a dull plot, and a poorly executed story.
• Fighter – Attempting to echo the cinematic achievement of Top Gun Maverick, this movie falls short of expectations. It lacks the intensity and dedication seen in the training and execution of flight sequences in Top Gun Maverick. Additionally, it misses the mark on delivering a vibe similar to Uri: The Surgical Strike.
• Murder Mubarak – The film is watchable mainly because of Pankaj Tripathi’s performance, which is the sole highlight of an otherwise boring production. While other characters’ attempts might be passable to some, but I think that their performances don’t quite hit the mark.

It’s a genre that’s exploded in richness and quality, especially over the past few years. As I now recline, the adrenaline still coursing through my veins from the latest episode binge, I feel compelled to scribble down some thoughts on the best Hindi action web series that have captured my attention and, quite frankly, my awe.

Best Hindi Action Web Series You Must Watch Once!

Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo

This series had to be first on the list because it is an acting powerhouse. An unconventional title already grabbed my attention, but this series offers a quirky yet thrilling look at the complex dynamics of family and crime.

It’s a blend that resonates oddly with the humor amidst the chaos, making it a unique entrant in the action genre. Yes, stalwarts like Dimple Kapadia, Angira Dhar, and Radhika Madaan have nailed it in the series. What women can do for survival is something you must witness in this high-octane web series. The action is mind-blowing, and the constant twists are riveting.

Aarya

Another woman-centric series that I adore entirely is Aarya. Portrayed by Sushmita Sen, I have seen a different side of her. She was always into these serious roles with no action at all.

But in this series, the transformation of Aarya (Sen) from a protective mother to a fierce protector of her family’s illicit empire is nothing short of captivating. The tension in each episode kept me clenched, wondering just how far she’d go to keep her children safe.

Mirzapur

Pankaj Tripathi is a superstar, and this web series has proved his worth. And his portrayal is beautifully complemented by actors Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Shweta Tripathi, and Vikrant Massey. The raw power struggle and the lawless land of Mirzapur had me on the edge of my seat from the get-go.

The series masterfully portrays a world where power and guns speak louder than words, and loyalty is as fickle as a coin flip. It’s an intense ride through the bylanes of a town that’s almost a character in itself.

Sacred Games

I was never a fan of Saif Ali Khan, but this series made me fall in love with his acting. This series was a game-changer in more ways than one. And I am sure that all the actors and the makers equally changed the face of OTT.

It’s not just the narrative of Mumbai’s underbelly that’s gripping but also the profound philosophies that underpin it. Sartaj Singh (played by Saif Ali Khan) chase to unravel what’s at stake for the city is interlaced with action sequences that are as thought-provoking as they are visceral.

Family Man

Then there’s the Family Man, which melds relatable domesticity with the thrills of anti-terrorism. Watching Srikant Tiwari navigate the duality of his life is a roller coaster that blends action with moments of unexpected humor and tenderness.

Every frame and scene is unique, and every scene will surely give you goosebumps.

Special Ops

Diary, if you’re talking about a series that combines intelligence with action, “Special Ops” is a name I can’t overlook. Following Himmat Singh, played by Kay Kay Menon, pursuit of a single terrorist mastermind over the course of several years, this show unfolds like a chess game, with moves and countermoves that keep you guessing.

Bard of Blood

Espionage takes a poetic turn in “Bard of Blood.” I saw Emraan Hashmi on screen after a very long time. And he has done justice to the character. The blend of action with the main character’s love for literature and his complex past made for a refreshing, intelligent, and adrenaline-pumping narrative.

Freelancer

Mohit Raina is genuinely one of my favorite actors. When it comes to action, he is just perfect for the role. And in this series, too, he doesn’t disappoint an inch. This series is a gripping tale of a mercenary navigating the criminal underworld. Its action sequences are as slick as they are smart, portraying a protagonist whose skills are as sharp as his wit.

The Night Manager

This series is a blend of hotness and action. Hotness comes in the form of Aditya Roy Kapoor and believe me, Anil Kapoor is no less. And what do I say about the series? It’s outstanding. The blend of action and thriller is one cannot miss. The surprise package in this series is Tillotama Shome, who is just as outstanding as the other star cast. I can literally binge watch this series.

Guns and Gulaabs

The newest entrant in the world of OTT is “Guns and Gulaabs.” This series by Raj & DK is an incredible series based on the 90s world of crime. The retro aesthetic is just the backdrop for a story rife with dark humor and action. A balance of nostalgia and novelty makes for an engaging watch.

And what do I say about the cast? It has a top-notch cast, including Rajkummar Rao, Dulquer Salman, Gulshan Devaiah, and Adarsh Gourav. Imagine what power-packed the series is!

Rana Naidu

I always considered Venkatesh Daggubati, a chocolate hero who is busy wooing girls and dancing around the trees. He must have done action films, but personally, I am unaware of them. So, his ruthless portrayal in this series with so much swearing was a big surprise for me.

Furthermore, his acting is complemented by stalwarts like Rana Daggubatti, Sushant Singh, Abhishek Banerjee, and Surveen Chawla, who have done a fantabulous job. The gritty streets, darker corners, and crime world are laid bare in “Rana Naidu.” It’s action-packed and intense, with characters that exude a menacing charm hard to find elsewhere.

Dahaad

This is Sonakshi Sinha’s first OTT outing; she has done a marvelous job. The series is inspired by Inspired by Mohan Kumar, who killed women looking for marriage. And the portrayal of his serial killer is portrayed by Vijay Verma, who has done an outstanding job.

Interestingly, the sound of “Dahaad” is a thunderous clap in the quiet night — a series that’s as much a psychological thriller as an action spectacle. It’s an actual edge-of-your-seat experience that left me breathless at its intensity.

Aranyak

“Aranyak” presents a misty, mysterious setting where the action is physical and intensely psychological. A teenage girl is raped, and what follows next is a series of events that forces two upright officers to battle their own demons as well. It’s an amalgamation of folklore and suspense that’s hauntingly beautiful.

As my thoughts spill onto this page, I am grateful for this series’s diverse narratives. They have expanded my understanding of the breadth of Indian storytelling, where action is not just gunfights and fistfights but also the intense drama of human emotions played out against a backdrop of cultural richness.

The night is quiet now, Diary, but my mind is anything but. These series have left an indelible mark, showing me the pulsating heart of Indian action storytelling, where every punch and every plot twist is a story in itself.
