The third season of the Panchayat series is out on Amazon Prime, and the fun rollercoaster ride is on. The series that made me laugh and cry at times is back. I watched the third season in just two days.

TVF (The Viral Fever) has yet again done an outstanding job with this series, which follows the journey of Abhishek Tripathi, who was once reluctant to come to this small village but, with time, becomes an integral part of it.

I want to mention that I started watching the third season again with my sister because I simply couldn’t get over this series. It is so good. However, I realized that the narrative is full of life lessons.

Embrace new experiences with an open mind

Abhishek initially struggles with his placement in Phulera. Obviously, he is an urban lad and has left behind a lot of comforts. However, as he begins to adapt, he realizes that embracing new experiences can lead to personal growth.

Thus, the Panchayat series teaches us to step out of our comfort zones and see the world through different lenses. Be open to unfamiliar adventures. Show a willingness to embrace change, as this change can lead to unexpected opportunities and a deeper understanding of life.

Unity is the best policy

Be it any problem, the entire team—from Sachiv ji (Jitendra Kumar), Vikas (Chandan Roy) to Pradhan ji (Neena Gupta—Raghubir Yadav) and Prahladcha (Faisal Malik)—tackles the problems together. If anyone goes wrong, they mend ways, make the person realize their mistake, but eventually all come together. Even the Vidhayak (Pankaj Jha) couldn’t break this unity.

In a world that often feels fragmented, the series underscores the value of being connected and supportive of those around us.

There is no option other than being resilient

Abhishek, aka Sachiv ji’s journey, is undoubtedly one of resilience and perseverance. Throughout the series, he has faced immense problems, from adjusting to rural life to dealing with bureaucratic hurdles.

Yet he learns to navigate and overcome obstacles. Thus, the Panchayat series teaches us the value of resilience, highlighting that persistence and determination can help us overcome even the most daunting challenges.

Not only Abhishek but also the cute amma (Abha Sharma) teaches us to be resilient if we wish to achieve our dreams.  

Finding joy in simple things

I personally loved the simplicity of Phulera. Undoubtedly, there is a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of city life. I can relate to this because visiting my native place during summer vacation was a constant affair. Life in the rural areas is mind-boggling yet calming.

The villagers find joy in simple pleasures; their contentment is a powerful lesson in appreciating what we have. Thus, this series encourages viewers to find happiness in the small things and recognize that contentment often comes from within rather than from material possessions or external achievements.

The people of Phulera have no cars, lavish houses, or swanky phones, but they are happy. They are content with their simple lives.

Caring for the well-being of others

Though the members have their occasional tiffs and disagreements, they never stop caring for each other. For instance, Prahladcha lost his son, and everyone knows how addicted he is to alcohol.

So, Vikas and Pradhanji take it upon themselves to help him deal with this crisis. They cook for him, and Vikas even mends his khaat (bed) because he cares for him. Besides, the entire village sympathizes with him and takes care of him.

The importance of humor

One of the standout features of Panchayat series is its light-hearted humor. The series uses wit and comedy to tackle serious issues, making them more relatable and less overwhelming. At times, when I heard the silly jokes and saw the secret laughter shared by the characters, it instantly brought a big smile to my face.

I think that’s what the series is aiming for. You should always keep smiling no matter what. A sense of humor can be a powerful coping mechanism.

Empathy and understanding

Throughout the series, Abhishek learns to empathize with the villagers and understand their perspectives and problems. For example, when Ammaji desperately wants a pakka (cement) house, he first gets angry but understands her perspective and shows her how to deal with it.

Due to his empathetic nature, he fosters mutual respect and collaboration. Panchayat series emphasizes the importance of understanding others’ viewpoints and the need for empathy in building strong, harmonious relationships. It reminds us that compassion and patience can bridge divides and create more inclusive communities.

Is shelter necessary than your loved ones?

As mentioned above, Ammaji desperately wants pakka house, and for that, she pretends to be alienated from her family. She desperately convinces Abhishek to give her house under the Prime Minister’s housing scheme.

Amidst this, she falls ill, but she is determined not to seek help from her son because she wants to show how lonely she is—to have the Pakka house.

But later in the series, you must see how Prahlad changes her viewpoint. I want you to witness it because my words cannot suffice to convey the emotions.  

You must never believe hearsay

Bhushan (played by the super talented Durgesh Kumar) and his wife Kranti Devi Sharma (Sunita Rajwar), along with his sidekicks Binod (Ashok Pathak) and Madhav (Bulloo Kumar), continue praising the MLA Chandrakishore Singh to ensure he helps them in the Panchayat elections.

In the process, the MLA never considers that he might be investing in the wrong people and thoroughly believes in hearsay. Due to this, he is always branded as “bad” in the series. He teaches an important lesson: if you don’t make sound decisions, you risk losing both assets and respect.

Protect your loved one no matter what

In many instances, external forces try to attack the loyal “Panchayat” group, but unitedly they defeat them all. The way they extend protection even to the pigeon owner is something you must watch for yourself. Additionally, don’t miss out on the last episode – it deserves all the praise.

Through its characters and their experiences, the series imparts valuable insights into embracing new experiences, valuing community, finding contentment in simplicity, and so much more. Thanks to the digital world, we’re privileged to learn about many celebrities, one of whom was Amar Singh Chamkila. Honestly, I did not know of him, nor had I ever heard his name before. However, this film streaming on Netflix took me on a rollercoaster ride, showcasing the life of this legendary singer.

Amar Singh Chamkila – Premises of the Film

The movie revolves around the struggles, fame, and untimely death of singer Amar Singh Chamkila. His “vulgar” lyrics brought him fame across Punjab, but they also attracted the wrath of various societal groups. But he believed he must deliver what the audiences genuinely wanted. Hence, he never changed the course of his career. He continued with his “sleazy” lyrics.

Eventually, while riding high on success, he faced significant criticism before his untimely death. He, along with his second wife Amarjot and two band members, were assassinated in 1988 by unknown assailants, and their murders remain unresolved.

What Did I Like the Most?

Diljit, Diljit, and Diljit… Besides, after Jab Harry Met Sejal and Love Aaj Kal (starring Sara and Kartik), I had lost a bit of faith in Imtiaz Ali. I wondered how a director like him could produce such disappointing films. Then came Amar Singh Chamkila, and it felt like Imtiaz’s golden days of direction were back!

The movie is thoughtfully crafted, chronicling every significant moment of Amar Singh Chamkila’s life so intimately that you feel as if you are part of his journey. The performances by the cast are simply top-notch. Even the briefest roles leave a lasting impact on the film’s narrative.

The inclusion of clips featuring the real Amar Singh Chamkila piques curiosity and encourages viewers to learn more about him. The film beautifully depicts how each event in his life left a mark on the people of Punjab.

Additionally, the end credits are fascinating; they feature real-life photos of the characters alongside their family members, adding a layer of authenticity and emotional depth.

Direction: I strongly believe that no director could have done justice to a biography like Imtiaz Ali did with this film. He has masterfully captured the most intricate moments of the lead character’s life. Not once did I feel bored. Most importantly, Imtiaz and his team have beautifully established the connection between Chamkila’s lyrics and his life experiences.

Acting: What can I say about the acting? Every actor has delivered a fantastic performance. Of course, Diljit steals the show, and deservedly so. I believe he merits all the praise. After watching the movie, I viewed some clips of the real Chamkila and realized that Diljit mastered Chamkila’s body language aesthetically. Parineeti also performed well, although her role was quite brief.

Sound and Cinematography: It’s so refreshing to see the gulley and nukkad of 1980s Punjab captured on film. Moreover, the soundtrack is lively and peppy— and why not — it is by A.R. Rahman. Yes, I must admit, it took me some time to read the subtitles and understand the lyrics. Yet, the music is soothing to both the ears and the mind.

What I Didn’t Like About the Movie?

There isn’t much to complain about. However, I felt that Parineeti’s role could have been more prominent. Despite being a close aide and, most importantly, his wife, she doesn’t really stand out. Additionally, it took me some time to read the subtitles and understand the lyrics, which was an effort, but I’m not complaining.

Well, that wraps up my review of Amar Singh Chamkila. I wholeheartedly urge everyone to watch it. This film is more than just a biography—it’s a deep dive into a compelling story, still shrouded in mystery. Who could have shot him? It’s so tragic that this case remains unresolved.

I had been hoping that 2024 would bring films addressing the environmental crisis, and ‘Poacher’ was released. I am a diehard fan of wildlife documentaries and continually follow them.

In fact, I have binge-watched some. So, I was highly anticipating this web series. My interest in it wasn’t swayed by the fact that Alia Bhatt produced it; it was already on my watchlist.

And my verdict is – this web series is an absolute must-watch!

What is Poacher web series all about?

As its name suggests, “Poacher” delves into the grim world of elephant poaching, weaving a narrative around real-life incidents. It follows forest officials in Kerala as they uncover an extensive ivory poaching ring. As the series unfolds, it becomes apparent that this illicit trade extends far beyond Kerala, implicating high-ranking individuals across the country.

The story centers on three pivotal characters: Mala, played by Nimisha Sajayan, is driven by a profound sense of remorse stemming from her father’s past as a hunter. Determined to atone for her family’s history, she is relentless in her pursuit of justice.

Alan, portrayed by Roshan Mathew, is the analytical mind of the group, piecing together the puzzle by scrutinizing telephone records. Their senior, Neel, brought to life by Dibyendu Bhattacharya, offers unwavering support to the team, guiding them through their perilous journey.

Originally produced in Malayalam, the series is also available in various languages, including Hindi, making it accessible to a wider audience. Each character, especially Mala, plays a crucial role in the narrative, highlighting the complex emotions and motivations driving those who fight against wildlife crimes.

What did I like the most?

Let me begin with the cinematography. The camera work is impeccable, capturing the lush greenery, the animals, and the dense forests in breathtaking detail. The bird’s-eye view shots, in particular, are outstanding and definitely a highlight. Equally impressive is the direction; each frame and the actors’ nuanced performances convey profound messages without words.

The director has masterfully brought the story to life onscreen. But the acting truly stands out—all the actors deliver exceptional performances. Dibyendu Bhattacharya’s presence is especially notable. Having been a fan since “Dev D,” I can say he continues to impress without fail.

Admittedly, my exposure to films from the South had been limited, leading me to an uninformed assumption that they primarily produced “masala” films. This series proved me wrong and was a genuine eye-opener. It even rekindled a childhood memory of visiting Kerala, where I encountered the sale of Hastidanta (elephant tusks) and my father’s stern advice against buying it.

This series made me realize the challenging and often thankless job of forest officials, akin to police officers but constrained by numerous rules and permissions before action can be taken. The portrayal of the struggle to save elephants is convincingly real, and the computer-generated images of animals serve as a somber reminder of human encroachment on their territories. It’s deeply saddening and heart-wrenching.

The poaching scenes are particularly impactful, inducing goosebumps. They underscore the urgency and passion behind wildlife conservation efforts. Witnessing the inhumane treatment of such majestic creatures for mere profit is distressing. The lack of remorse in the poachers’ eyes literally made me immensely angry. Moreover, the poaching scenes are particularly powerful, invoking a deep sense of urgency for wildlife conservation.

What I didn’t like about the Poacher?

However, the series is not without its flaws. Certain scenes feel unnecessarily prolonged, diluting the narrative’s impact. The inclusion of characters who serve primarily to deliver moral lessons can feel forced and detract from the story’s engagement.

I felt, Kani Kusruti, a talented actor, is underutilized and I literally yearned for more of her presence. The subplot concerning Neel’s (Dibyendu Bhattacharya) illness feels disconnected from the main narrative, serving more as a distraction than a valuable addition.

Moreover, the character of Mala (Nimisha Sajayan) is often portrayed in a consistently serious manner, lacking moments of fun that could have added depth to her character. The parallel narratives of past and present poaching events sometimes create confusion rather than clarity.

The series finale, particularly, felt lacking. The dramatization of the events in the sensitive area, leading to a mob scene, seemed unnecessary and failed to resonate with me.

Despite these critiques, “Poacher” remains a compelling watch, offering a powerful exploration of wildlife conservation issues that leave a lasting impression.

Regardless of one’s stance on environmentalism or affinity for animals, “Poacher” is a series that resonates deeply. It possesses the power to stir something within us, compelling to reconsider our actions towards animals.

Despite facing certain limitations, the team behind this series has accomplished a commendable feat. Their effort in crafting such a thought-provoking web series deserves high praise. So, a hearty kudos to the entire team for their remarkable achievement in creating a series that entertains, educates and inspires.

The film ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan’ centers around the lives of three inseparable best friends – Imaad Ali, Ahana Singh, and Neil Pereira, portrayed by Siddhant, Ananya, and Adarsh, respectively. Each character and actor add a unique flavor to the narrative, enriching the story with their distinct backgrounds and aspirations.

Imaad Ali, with his sharp wit and engaging personality, lights up stages as a stand-up comedian. His journey in the world of comedy provides a glimpse into the life of an artist who skillfully balances humor and reality. Neil Pereira, on the other hand, is a driven personal trainer, passionately making his mark in the fitness industry.

His dedication and hard work shine a light on the demanding and competitive world of personal fitness. Ahana Singh, an MBA graduate from the prestigious Harvard University, embarks on her career as a corporate consultant, bringing her sharp intellect and strategic thinking to the corporate world.

Her journey provides insight into the challenges and triumphs faced by a young professional in a demanding corporate environment.

What stands out in Kho Gaye Hum Kahan?

Upon seeing Ananya Pandey in the trailer for ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan,’ I initially had my reservations about watching it. However, she is accompanied by an incredibly talented cast, including Siddhant Chaturvedi and Adarsh Gourav. To my pleasant surprise, Ananya not only holds her own but also shines alongside these skilled actors.

This reminds me of what I mentioned in a previous post about women-centric films in Bollywood and Tara Sutaria – “sometimes, all it takes is the right opportunity at the right moment.” Post ‘Gehraiyaan,’ it seems Ananya has seized another such opportunity to showcase her evolving talent. Believe me, she embraces it with full commitment.

As for the male leads, what can I say? They are fantastic, as usual. Both Siddhant and Adarsh deliver their roles with supreme finesse. Their effortless acting is a real treat to watch and adds significantly to the film’s appeal.

Now, turning to the story itself, if you’re of the belief that ‘ek ladka ladki kabhi dost nahi ho sakta‘ (a boy and a girl can never be just friends), this film challenges that notion head-on. Refreshingly, there’s no romantic subplot between the friends.

Instead, the film focuses on their pure, unadulterated friendship. It’s a testament to the strength and depth of their bond that they always have each other’s backs through fights and love.

Moreover, ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan’ does an exceptional job of highlighting the disadvantages of social media. It’s a narrative that’s especially relevant in today’s digital age, where social media is the backbone when it comes to shaping relationships and personal identities. The film skillfully balances the portrayal of these challenges with the enduring value of genuine, heartfelt friendship.

Amidst this, the aspect that makes this film watchable is its approach to storytelling. It doesn’t resort to preachy messages; instead, it presents the reality in a raw and unfiltered manner. The film subtly imparts life lessons without dictating any rules, allowing the audience to draw their conclusions from the experiences and interactions of the characters.

This nuanced approach to storytelling enhances the film’s impact, making it not just a cinematic experience but also a reflective journey for the audience.

Performance of the actors

The performances in ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan’ are a testament to the actors’ immense talent and dedication. Each of the three leads – Ananya Pandey, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Adarsh Gourav – have delivered some of their best work in this film.

Ananya Pandey, particularly, was a delightful surprise, especially considering her previous role in ‘Student of the Year 2.’ She brings a fresh energy and depth to her character that is both unexpected and impressive.

However, it must be acknowledged that Siddhant and Adarsh, with their commanding presence and nuanced acting, do tend to overshadow Ananya in certain aspects of the film. Choosing the best among them is a tough call, as each actor brings something unique and compelling to the table.

Siddhant’s portrayal of a stand-up comedian is a highlight of the film. His comedic timing is impeccable, and his segments are both funny and engaging – definitely a must-watch. Adarsh, on the other hand, is effortlessly natural in every scene. He manages to hold his own, exuding a strong presence even in the most intense and stressful scenes.

Kalki Koechlin, portraying Simran Kohli, adds yet another layer of excellence to the film. Her chemistry with Siddhant is captivating, and her performance is a treat to watch.

What did I hate about the Kho Gaye Hum Kahan Movie?

I didn’t find much to dislike in ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan.’ Still, I did feel that some scenes, particularly those involving Rohan Gurbaxani, who plays Rohan Bhatia – Ananya Pandey’s character’s boyfriend – were a bit too prolonged.

As for the music, while it wasn’t outstanding, it was nevertheless soothing. However, one aspect of the film that stood out to me was its portrayal of influencers.

At times, the film showed the judgmental side of this culture. However, I think it’s important to understand that for many influencers, this is more than just a platform for self-expression. It’s their job, and for some, it’s their livelihood.

The most impactful line for me from the ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan’ movie was, “Find your tribe; agar dost hai toh followers ki kya zaroorat hai.” This line truly captured my heart. It resonated deeply with me, reminding me of the invaluable presence of real friends in a world where social media followers are often mistakenly equated with meaningful relationships.

I loved the movie so much that I’m already planning to watch it again. I must admit, it’s not just a film for me. Indeed, it struck a personal chord, reminding me of my own ‘tribe’ and how they’ve been my support system through various challenges. Furthermore, it’s a beautiful reminder of the importance of cherishing genuine connections over virtual ones.

Darlings

“Darlings” stands out not just for its compelling narrative but also for the exceptional portrayal of not one but two female leads. In the realm of best women-centric films in Bollywood, this movie is undeniably noteworthy.

Apurva

When I first saw Tara Sutaria in “Student of the Year 2,” I initially thought she might be another actress emerging from the glamorous yet often stereotyped school of Karan Johar. However, I was reminded of Alia Bhatt, who followed a similar path but has since carved out a remarkable niche for herself.

This realization made me reconsider: sometimes, all it takes is the right opportunity at the right moment. This was precisely the case for Tara in “Apurva,” where she delivered an exceptional performance.

In this film, she wasn’t just a part of the story; she was its backbone. Her portrayal outshines every other character, showcasing her undeniable talent.

Tara’s captivating presence and skillful acting throughout “Apurva” are not just commendable but a must-watch, proving that she is much more than a product of a certain cinematic background – she is a formidable actress in her own right!

Kathal

Cops are traditionally tasked with diffusing crime and apprehending culprits. However, in Kathal – a satirical comedy, the storyline takes an amusingly unconventional turn.

Instead of chasing down typical criminals, the plot revolves around the quest to find two exotic-breed jackfruits and the culprits behind their disappearance. Entrusted with this unusual mission is the character Mahima Basor, portrayed brilliantly by Sanya Malhotra.

In this role, Sanya delivers an outstanding performance that is both captivating and hilarious. Her portrayal of Mahima’s frustration and determination to uncover the truth behind the missing jackfruits is a delight to watch.

Amidst the comedic twists and turns, Sanya’s acting prowess shines through, offering a performance that is not just entertaining but also a testament to her versatility as an actress. Deepika’s portrayal is nothing short of compelling. She captures the innocence and strong willpower of Laxmi with a depth that is both authentic and moving. Her performance is a testament to her exceptional acting skills, as she brings the character’s journey to life with grace and sincerity.

While “Chhapaak” is outstanding in its narrative and performances, it does have moments where the pacing slows down, slightly diminishing its overall impact. Nevertheless, the film succeeds in beautifully narrating the struggles and triumphs of acid attack survivors, making it a significant and heartfelt contribution to women-centric cinema in Bollywood.

Pagglait

“Pagglait,” translating to ‘mad’ or ‘crazy,’ is another film featuring Sanya Malhotra that undoubtedly deserves mention on this list of best women-centric films in Bollywood. This intriguing story unfolds the life of a young woman who finds herself widowed just five months into her marriage.

Intriguingly, she discovers an absence of grief or emotional connection to her late husband, leading her into an unexpected journey of self-discovery.

The crux of “Pagglait” lies in how she navigates this complex situation, making it a compelling watch. Sanya Malhotra, in her role, truly shines. Her portrayal is effortlessly genuine, bringing a natural ease and depth to her character that’s both relatable and captivating.

Watching her in this movie is an absolute delight; she brings a refreshing authenticity that makes her character’s journey all the more engaging.

Lost

Concluding my list of top women-centric Bollywood films is the remarkable “Lost,” featuring the talented Yami Gautam. Watching Yami on screen is always a delight.

Her evolution from being recognized primarily as the “fair and lovely” girl to an actress capable of single-handedly anchoring a film is nothing short of impressive. “Lost” is particularly noteworthy, not just for its compelling narrative but for Yami’s extraordinary portrayal.

The sincerity and dedication she brings to every scene are truly commendable. Yami consistently immerses herself fully in every character she plays, and her performance in “Lost” is a testament to her passion and skill as an actress.

Finding true love in the modern dating world is extremely difficult. This challenge intensifies if you are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community due to societal norms and pressures. Remember how, in our childhood and teenage years, queer relationships were considered taboo? Thankfully, things have changed, albeit with ongoing challenges.

Amidst these reflections, I decided to watch an amazing docuseries titled “Rainbow Rishta.” Now, you might be wondering about the series. Let’s delve into that and find out more.

Why did I love Rainbow Rishta?

First, let me explain why “Rainbow Rishta” piqued my interest. If you’re familiar with “Made in Heaven” Season 2, you might recognize Meher, also known as Dr. Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju.

I’ve been a fan of hers since I started following her on Instagram. Dr. Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju, who underwent gender affirmation surgery at 21, is a trailblazer as Karnataka’s first transgender doctor. Her involvement in the docuseries was enough to draw me in.

Each episode of “Rainbow Rishta” reveals a new narrative, ranging from Daniella’s wedding preparations to the enchanting story set in the lush monsoon season. Among these, the story that truly captured my heart was that of Sadam Hanjabam.

I won’t divulge any details about it because the series itself is a must-watch to appreciate these narratives fully. However, I found one specialty – often, docuseries or documentaries can come across as scripted, but “Rainbow Rishta” stands out for its authenticity.

The struggles are real…

It chronicles the real struggles faced by members of the LGBTQIA+ community. From the outside, it’s easy to pass judgment without understanding their experiences. Have we ever truly considered what they might be going through, the challenges they face in their lives, or the stories that shaped them? This series invites us to reflect on these important questions.

Indeed, our understanding is often limited. In a world where queer relationships are frequently viewed negatively, “Rainbow Rishta” offers a more balanced perspective. Watching the show, I felt a sense of hope for all the couples featured despite the hurdles they faced.

Some struggle with societal issues like finding a house to rent due to their queer identity, while others face personal challenges, such as gaining acceptance from their parents. This series sheds light on these diverse experiences, emphasizing the resilience and love that these couples embody.

The overall setting of “Rainbow Rishta” is truly mind-blowing. What stands out most is the series’ masterful handling of transitions from one story to the next. These transitions are executed so subtly they keep you deeply engaged and eager to learn more.

As you’re absorbed in one narrative, you find yourself simultaneously curious about the developments in the other stories. This seamless storytelling not only maintains your interest but also skillfully weaves together the various threads of each individual’s journey, creating a rich tapestry of experiences that is both captivating and thought-provoking.

One particularly heartwarming moment in the series, which had me reaching for a box of tissues, involves Soham and Suresh. I apologize for the spoiler, but it’s worth mentioning. In their story, Suresh’s nephew and niece play a pivotal role.

Special mention

What’s so special about this, you might ask? These children, despite their young age, display an inspiring lack of judgment and a genuine wish for the best in life for Suresh and Soham. This moment touched my soul profoundly.

It serves as a reminder of the innate innocence and wisdom of children, who, with their unfiltered view of the world, can teach us invaluable lessons in acceptance and love. The sincerity and empathy shown by these kids are both heartening and thought-provoking, highlighting the inherent goodness that we can all learn from.

On a parting note…

The docuseries, undoubtedly unscripted, presents an array of heartwarming moments that prompt deep reflection. While there are instances of heartbreak, these are handled with care and are highly informative.

Despite the fact that same-sex marriages are not yet legal in India, the Supreme Court’s directive to “end discrimination against the queer community” marks a significant step forward. As members of society, it’s crucial that we embrace this directive.

After all, love truly has the power to conquer great heights. This series not only sheds light on the struggles and triumphs within the LGBTQIA+ community but also serves as a poignant reminder of the universal power and resilience of love.
