Dear Diary,

Certain films embed themselves in our minds, leaving a lasting impact. The ‘Wake Up Sid’ film is one such cinematic gem that has remained deeply etched in my heart. This movie, I believe, captured the essence of urban youth with a unique fervor.

Helmed by Ayan Mukerji and starring the talented Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma, ‘Wake Up Sid’ film transcended the usual boundaries of Bollywood storytelling. It offered viewers a fresh and relatable perspective on life, ambition, and the journey of self-discovery.

Even 15 years after its release, I find myself drawn to ‘Wake Up Sid’ with the same level of enthusiasm as when I first watched it. So, what exactly makes this film stand out so remarkably?

Why Wake Up Sid Film Stands Out?

A very simple yet unique story

‘Wake Up Sid‘ film was a trailblazer in many respects. It broke away from the quintessential Bollywood formula of romance and mindless action, opting instead for a narrative that centered on the internal journey of its protagonist, Siddharth Mehra, brilliantly portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor.

In our youth, there comes a point where confusion reigns, and paths seem unclear. Some find guidance, while others lose their way. This film beautifully captures that very essence.

Its portrayal of young adults grappling with personal aspirations against the backdrop of familial expectations resonated deeply with many viewers. It marked a significant shift in the kind of stories Bollywood traditionally told.

I am very sure that many viewers found a piece of themselves in ‘Wake Up Sid’ film. It spoke to the dilemma faced by so many of us – being tethered to parental expectations, often at the cost of our own dreams. This film not only depicted this struggle but also brought to light the importance of finding one’s own path in life.

It created a major impact on unique storytelling and filmmaking

The ‘Wake Up Sid’ film ignited a trend in Bollywood, shifting the focus to storytelling that embraced more realistic and relatable characters, as well as life situations that resonated with audiences.

Its narrative style, a masterful blend of light-hearted moments and profound emotional depth, set a new standard and became a source of inspiration for many contemporary filmmakers.

I still hold the belief that the nuances of this film were captured so aptly that it felt like a narration of my own story – a sentiment I believe many young people can relate to. ‘Wake Up Sid’ didn’t just tell a story; it mirrored the experiences and emotions. In fact, it is a rite of passage for much of the youth, making it a timeless piece in Indian cinema.

Most importantly, we got to experience the most unusual jodi – Konkana-Ranbir. Unconventional yet the cutest in the history of Hindi Film Industry.

Challenges of the affluent class

When we think of narratives from middle-class or financially deprived families, the stories often revolve around struggles and hardships. There’s a common perception that those from the upper-class lead fulfilled lives simply due to their financial stability and established businesses. However, the ‘Wake Up Sid’ film challenges this notion, shedding light on the complexities of life even amid affluence.

The film delves into the theme of self-exploration but is uniquely set against an urban, affluent backdrop. Siddharth Mehra, or Sid, the protagonist, comes from a family with a successful business. He enjoys privileges like having credit cards at his disposal and the option to buy any car he desires – luxuries not afforded to everyone.

Yet, his father’s insistence on him becoming independent and self-sufficient highlights a different kind of challenge. Despite all the material wealth, there’s a pressing need for him to carve out his own identity and path in life.

This narrative brings to light an important realization: Modern and affluent youth, too, face their own unique set of challenges. These challenges might be different from those experienced by other social classes, and they are often overlooked or underappreciated.

‘Wake Up Sid’ film invites us to broaden our understanding and acknowledge that struggles and the journey of self-discovery are not confined to any one class.

Memorable characters and their realistic performances

The success of the ‘Wake Up Sid’ film owes much to the remarkable performances of Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma. Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Sid’s transformation from a carefree and aimless youth to a responsible individual is not just convincing but truly mind-blowing. His journey in the film resonates with anyone who has struggled to find direction in life.

Konkona Sen Sharma, as Aisha, an ambitious writer making her way in Mumbai, brings a level of nuance and depth that is both powerful and touching. Her portrayal of Aisha is filled with profoundly relatable moments.

For instance, the scene where she lovingly smells her new books captures a simple yet universal joy for many book lovers. I find myself deeply connected to this gesture, as I cherish the same ritual with my books.

Additionally, Aisha’s cautious demeanor around Sid, stemming from her desire not to send any unintended signals, adds layers to her character. It’s a subtle yet significant portrayal of the complexities often involved in new friendships and relationships, particularly from a woman’s perspective in a modern urban setting.

These finely crafted performances make the characters of Sid and Aisha not just memorable but incredibly relatable, contributing significantly to the film’s enduring appeal.

Every job is equal, but you need to be passionate about it

Numerous times, I found myself engulfed in confusion about my career path. However, once I embraced writing, I committed to it wholeheartedly, pouring my heart and soul into every word. This personal journey resonates deeply with Siddharth Mehra’s (Sid’s) story in the ‘Wake Up Sid’ film.

Sid, much like many of us, knew that following in his father’s footsteps and running the family business wasn’t meant for him. Yet, he was initially unaware of his own strengths and passions. His journey of self-discovery, particularly in the realm of photography, is beautifully portrayed in the film.

Sid’s realization that photography was his true calling and his decision to pursue it with all his heart is a pivotal moment in the film. Every photograph he takes in the film tells a story, illustrating the idea that no job is too small or insignificant. What matters is the dedication and love one puts into their work.

Sid’s journey in ‘Wake Up Sid’ is a testament to the fact that finding one’s passion can often be a beacon of light in the confusing journey of career and self-discovery. His experience serves as an inspiring reminder that once we find our path, embracing it wholeheartedly can lead to fulfilling and meaningful achievements.

Every character adds depth to the film

It’s easy to initially perceive the roles of Shikha Talsania, Anupam Kher, Rahul Khanna, Supriya Pathak, Kainaz Motivala, and Namit Das in ‘Wake Up Sid’ as mere special appearances. However, this assumption couldn’t be further from the truth. Each of these actors plays a pivotal role, adding substantial depth and dimension to the story.

Take, for instance, Namit Das’s portrayal of Rishi, grappling with the heartache of failed love, or Shikha Talsania’s character, Laxmi, who brings to light the issue of body image and self-acceptance. Then there’s Supriya Pathak as Sarita Mehra, who earnestly tries to learn English and connect with her son in a modern, evolving world.

These characters are not just background figures; they are integral to the narrative, each with their own struggles and aspirations that enhance the film’s plot. Their individual stories and the way they intertwine with Sid’s journey contribute to the rich tapestry of ‘Wake Up Sid,’ making it more than just a coming-of-age film.

It’s a reflection of the diverse, often unseen struggles of everyday life, brought to the screen with sensitivity and realism. Each actor, no matter the size of their role, adds a unique layer to the film, creating a more immersive and relatable experience for the audience.

Over to you…

Fifteen years on, the ‘Wake Up Sid’ film continues to captivate audiences across generations and cultures. Amid worst films, this film is a ray of positivity for me. Its portrayal of the trials and triumphs of young adulthood remains as relevant and inspiring today as it was at its release.

The film is much more than a mere cinematic experience; it is a reflection of a society in flux and the evolving aspirations of Indian youth. Truly, this film stands tall as a testament to the power of cinema to capture the zeitgeist of an era, significantly influencing the narrative fabric of Bollywood.

Its continued relevance and appeal underscore the film’s insightful exploration of life’s complexities. The ‘Wake Up Sid’ film, with its nuanced storytelling and authentic characters, continues to be a beacon for those navigating the journey of self-discovery and adulthood.

Dear Diary,

Today, as the day drew to a close, I was confused about my life’s direction. In this moment of uncertainty, I strongly connected to Ved’s character (played by Ranbir Kapoor) in the film ‘Tamasha.’ This movie, which I turn to whenever I feel down, resonates deeply with me. When people ask me if ‘Tamasha’ is a good movie, my response is always an enthusiastic “HELL YEAH!!!”

Directed by Imtiaz Ali and featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, ‘Tamasha’ is more than just a film; it’s a profound exploration of the human condition. It delves into love, self-discovery, and the societal pressures we all face.

The film’s portrayal of these themes strikes a chord with me, especially on days like today when I’m searching for clarity and meaning in my own life. ‘Tamasha’ is not just a cinematic experience; it’s a journey into the depths of our psyche and a mirror reflecting our struggles and aspirations. Let’s delve deeper into why this film holds such a special place in my heart.

Is Tamasha a Good Movie?

Yes, yes, it is one of the best movies. Wondering why? Let’s dive in.

Embrace Your Inner Child

We all carry an inner child, but the demands of life and the pressures of a corporate environment often lead us to suppress this playful side. Yet, what’s wrong with indulging in childlike joys – be it endless chatter, playing with toys, or simply being ‘silly’? If enjoying these simple pleasures is considered childish, then so be it. The real measure is the happiness they bring.

Life Beyond the Race

Society often burdens us with expectations and a definition of success based on numerical achievements. However, life’s essence isn’t captured in these numbers. One of the key lessons from ‘Tamasha’ is to resist becoming a robot to societal norms.

Choosing a path that might be financially rewarding but leaves you unfulfilled is a hollow victory. True success is living life on your own terms, finding joy and fulfillment beyond professional accolades.

Pursuing Your Dreams

Echoing Eleanor Roosevelt’s words, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” it’s crucial to question whether your current path reflects your desires. Carving your own way is vital in a world where certain professions are glorified. Pursuing your passion, rather than conforming to external expectations, is the essence of fulfillment.

Balancing Work and Love

‘Tamasha’ poignantly shows the turmoil when personal life impacts professional performance. It highlights the delicate balance between love and career. While love is essential, maintaining professional commitment is equally important. Mastery in managing both spheres is a sign of true capability.

Encouragement from Parents

Parents naturally have aspirations for their children. However, recognizing that each child is unique with individual passions is crucial. Like my journey from software engineering to acting, supported wholeheartedly by my parents, letting children chart their own course is important. ‘Tamasha’ reinforces this message, urging parents to support their children’s dreams.

The Role of a Partner

In a relationship, your partner is more than just a source of love; they’re a confidant, a problem-solver, a shoulder to lean on. In times of uncertainty, your partner can offer invaluable perspectives. Open communication and shared empathy can ensure that you never feel isolated in your journey.

The Value of Expressing Yourself

We often hold back our true feelings, bottling them up. This habit can lead to a moment when these repressed emotions suddenly erupt, potentially causing us to miss out on important opportunities in both our personal and professional lives.

It’s essential to realize the importance of speaking up. Whether things are going wrong or right, expressing your feelings is crucial. There’s little benefit in keeping everything close to your heart. Open communication not only helps in resolving issues but also in sharing joy and strengthening connections with others.

The Necessity of Pausing in Life

‘Tamasha’ begins with Ved’s story in Corsica, where he steps away from his work routine. This break reveals a different side of him – relaxed and at ease, contrasting sharply with the high-strung corporate persona he adopts later in the film.

This narrative beautifully underscores the importance of taking breaks from our hectic schedules. It’s not just okay to pause and step back; it’s crucial for maintaining a healthy balance in life. Taking time off allows us to rediscover and reconnect with parts of ourselves that we often lose in the relentless pace of professional life.

Embracing Your True Self

One vital lesson we often overlook in life is the importance of accepting ourselves as we are. In our efforts to please others, we sometimes lose sight of our true selves. ‘Tamasha’ poignantly reminds us of the importance of embracing our entire being – flaws and all.

Pretending to be someone we’re not robs us of precious moments and authentic experiences. The best course of action is to strive to be the best version of ourselves, one that is true to our nature and not shaped by external expectations or pressures.

The Timelessness of Pursuing Dreams

Ved’s journey in ‘Tamasha’ exemplifies a powerful message: it’s never too late to follow your heart. The film illustrates that there’s no set age for chasing your dreams. It’s about recognizing them and putting in your best efforts to make them a reality.

Just as Ved eventually finds harmony with his true calling, the movie inspires us to do the same. It teaches us that embracing our passions and aspirations, regardless of our stage in life, is not just possible but essential for our fulfillment.

Over to you…

So, if you are wondering is Tamasha a good movie, I invite you to read this diary entry. Perhaps it might provide the answers you’re looking for. My admiration for this film has been unwavering, and I anticipate it will remain a cherished favorite. For those who find ‘Tamasha’ perplexing, I urge you to explore this entry before jumping to conclusions.

Dear Diary,

Today, I ventured outside my comfort zone, prompted by a friend, to watch “Animal” directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Normally, I shy away from violent films, but my appreciation for the exceptional acting in “Arjun Reddy” and “Kabir Singh,” also directed by Vanga, piqued my curiosity. However, “Animal” turned out to be a stark departure from what I had expected.

The film is steeped in gore and violence, featuring an intensity of bloodshed that I found overwhelming. As I sit down to pen my Animal movie review, I reflect on how this movie diverges from my usual preferences. Its relentless focus on raw, visceral scenes was a jarring experience, starkly contrasting with the character-driven narratives I usually enjoy.

In sum, while “Animal” showcases Vanga’s distinct directorial style, it may not resonate with those who are faint-hearted or prefer less graphic content.

Animal movie review – what I loved about it?

“Animal,” directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, presents a compelling narrative rooted in toxic parenting and its transformative impact on a young man. I won’t reiterate the plot, as it’s widely discussed online, but I’d like to share my take on the film.

Despite its criticisms of being tagged as misogynistic and overly gory, “Animal” has commendable aspects. A standout element is Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Rannvijay. His character, while embroiled in violence and unpredictability, displays a deep-rooted love and protective instinct towards his sisters. This complexity adds depth to his role, showcasing a blend of brutality and familial loyalty.

However, the story itself didn’t resonate much with me, but the performances were exceptional. Ranbir Kapoor shines in his role, but it’s Anil Kapoor, as the toxic father, who truly captivates. His presence on screen is magnetic, reaffirming his status as an unparalleled force in Indian cinema.

Rashmika Mandanna’s performance, particularly during her character’s emotional breakdown, is another highlight. Her portrayal is so powerful that it left me with goosebumps. This time, the film presents its female characters as strong-willed, even as they navigate a landscape tinged with misogyny. Rashmika’s scenes, especially her confrontational moments, are a marked improvement over the portrayal of women in films like “Kabir Singh” and “Arjun Reddy.”

Furthermore, the supporting cast, including Shakti Kapoor, Upendra Limaye, and Babloo Prithiveeraj, all deliver strong performances. Upendra Limaye’s impactful dialogues, championing the themes of “MADE IN INDIA” and “MAHARASHTRA,” are particularly memorable.

But the scene-stealer of “Animal” is undoubtedly Bobby Deol, known affectionately as LORD BOBBY by his fans. His silent yet powerful portrayal speaks volumes, with his actions conveying more than words ever could. His commanding screen presence, combined with a sleek physique and potent physicality, adds a captivating dimension to the film.

In conclusion, while “Animal” has sparked controversy for its thematic choices, it stands out for its stellar performances and the intricate layers within its characters.

Animal Movie Review: What I hated the most?

Why is the movie so long??? The first half of the film is brisk and engaging, setting a pace that promises an intriguing journey. However, the second half fails to maintain this momentum, transitioning into what I found to be a lackluster and, frankly, boring narrative.

The revenge drama, intended to be the film’s climax, becomes overly intense and, paradoxically, uninteresting. As someone who is not a fan of violence and bloodshed, I found myself either dozing off or consciously avoiding the fight scenes, which seemed endless and repetitive.

While I appreciated the protagonist, Rannvijay (played by Ranbir Kapoor), protective nature towards his sisters, his behavior towards other characters, particularly his wife, is jarringly inconsistent.

His rudeness and arrogance, coupled with a disdain for professional advice, raise questions about the portrayal of such characters in cinema. The film normalizes infidelity and vengeful behavior, which is concerning, considering the impact movies can have on public perception and behavior.

Another point of contention is the glorification of the character’s insensitive and violent traits. It’s a reflection of a worrying trend in cinema where such behavior is romanticized rather than critiqued. Additionally, the excessive violence in the film is not only distasteful but also comes across as mindless, particularly in scenes where the protagonist single-handedly confronts a horde of adversaries. This act feels tired and unrealistic.

On a parting note…

After watching “Animal,” I couldn’t help but compare Rannvijay, the film’s protagonist, with the more endearing characters of Barfi and the mature Bunny, portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor in his earlier works. While the character “Rannvijay” had the potential to stand out, the film fell short in various aspects.

One of the central themes of “Animal” is the impact of a dysfunctional family, a topic that certainly warrants exploration. However, the film’s approach to this sensitive subject could have been more subtle and nuanced. The heavy-handed portrayal, coupled with an unnecessarily prolonged duration, made the viewing experience feel laborious, almost as if stepping into the theater one day and leaving on another.

I acknowledge that my aversion to the film’s violent content might not align with the preferences of those who appreciate such genres. However, personal taste is subjective, and in my case, the excessive violence in “Animal” was off-putting. Moreover, I found the misogynistic undertones, particularly in the comments made by the lead actor, to be distasteful and unacceptable.

In conclusion, my review of “Animal” is unequivocally a thumbs down. While the film attempted to tackle complex themes and featured a talented cast, its execution, and narrative choices left much to be desired. It’s a reminder that sometimes, less is more when it comes to storytelling, especially when dealing with intricate and sensitive subjects like family dysfunction.
