Dear Diary,

After a sabbatical, I am back reviewing and diving into the entertainment world. This weekend, I decided to watch the most anticipated Paatal Lok Season 2 for my favourite, Hathi Ram Chaudhary, aka Jaideep Ahlawat. The funny thing is, I am a late entrant to the Paatal Lok craze. When season 1 was released, I was done with the crime drama and suspense genre and had no intention of giving this series a shot despite my brother’s constant insistence.

However, one fine day, I gave in to this request and decided to watch Season 1. And let me tell you, I was flabbergasted by the performances. I literally gave a pat on my back for watching this brilliant piece of art, which I unfairly delayed for so long! But better late than never!

Naturally, I was incredibly excited for Season 2. So, here’s a sneak peek of how I found season 2.

Paatal Lok Season 2: What’s the Plot?

Well, this time, the series delves into the landscapes of Nagaland and starts with the death of Jonathan Thom (Kaguirong Gonmei), who is an influential Naga leader and is brutally murdered in Delhi. Thom’s murder endangers the proposed trade summit in the northeastern state. Amidst this, the Delhi police find a lead and circle upon a young woman named Rose Lizo (Merenla Imsong). On the other hand, Hathi Ram also finds a lead in the same case and approaches ACP Ansari (Ishwak Singh). Together, they embark on solving this mysterious case and unfold some new chapters.

What Did I Like About the Series?

Undoubtedly, it has to be the star cast starting with Ahlawat. He is shown as ruthless and impatient but emotional at heart. His overall look, especially the paunch, is unmissable, yet he manages to chase tirelessly, nabbing the culprits, sliding from roofs and having great falls. Every stance of Jaideep is so relatable, like his limp because of uric acid, his laboured breathing, his misery for not getting due credit, his heartbreak, his bonding with a small kid – everything looks so real.

Besides, the bonding and chemistry of Hathi Ram and Ansari are the highlights of Pataal Lok Season 2. Their chemistry literally steals the spotlight! But even the other actors have done a fantabulous job. Gul Panag is Hathi Ram’s frustrated wife dealing with grief because her son stays in a hostel. Her frustration and the urge to be with her son is so relatable. Then, there’s Nagesh Kukunoor as Kapil Reddy, a soft-toned bureaucrat with shades of grey.

Once the duo (Hathi Ram and Ansari) reach Nagaland, they are greeted by many characters. I must add that kudos to the casting director for impeccable casting, especially since the series is set in Nagaland. First up is Tillotama Shome, who plays the character of SP Meghna Barua. Her overall presence is simply remarkable in the series. The way she stands by her principles and gives her all in solving the case is commendable. However, her feistiness is underlined, especially when the duo tries encroaching on her turf.

Then comes Daniel (Prashant Tamang), a skilled sniper who brings intensity to the plot. Every time he appeared on screen, my heart skipped a beat because I knew he was ready to take a life. And unfortunately, he does. But to know who he targets and how it unfolds, you must watch the series. Other than these main characters, Jahnu Barua, Bendang Walling, LC Sekhose, Rozelle Mero, and others give some of the best performances.

Coming to the story, the series is gripping, and every action in the series has an equal impact, like a ripple effect. The series doesn’t shy away from showcasing the region’s harsh realities that are generally misunderstood. The series carefully exposes the political tensions faced by the people. Besides, every character has a grey shade laced to it – be it Hathi Ram, who is obviously flawed, then Uncle Ken (Jahnu Barua), or even Jonathan Thom (played by Kaguirong Gonmei and the character who gets killed at the start of the series).

Thanks to its raw and relatable narrative, this series unquestionably earns its spot as a must-watch! But what makes it even more gripping is how every character is intricately connected. The entangled relationships gradually untangle and heighten the suspense at every turn.

What I Didn’t Like About the Series?

At some point, the pace was a problem for me in Paatal Lok Season 2. I felt the episodes were a bit stretched. Some subplots took a long time to unfold and tested my patience. I am sure some viewers might disagree with me, but that’s how I like it! I want pace….

However, introducing too many characters at once made it a bit overwhelming. For instance, Tamang appears at the beginning of the series and then sporadically throughout. This made keeping track of his arc difficult, and I had to backtrack to recall where I had seen him initially. The same issue arose with several other characters—there were so many that it became challenging to remember who was who!

Most importantly, the series thrives on gritty storytelling, but at times, it was getting too overwhelming for me to digest. I was expecting a breather from the dark theme by the introduction of lighter subplots. But I guess that’s how the genre is supposed to be!

Final Verdict

Well, here’s where I wrap my review of Paatal Lok Season 2. This series is definitely bold and compelling and takes you through the scenic beauty of Nagaland. While it stumbles slightly with pacing and character overload, it makes up for it with stellar performances, breathtaking visuals, and a hard-hitting narrative. But if you are someone who loves dark themes, then this series is definitely for you. And if you are a faint-hearted individual, you can give a pass.

Dear Diary,

One of my favourite films, “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” (ZNMD), has completed 13 long years… Gosh, I can’t believe it’s been 13 years. It feels like it was released just last year, and my excitement was immeasurable to witness my favourite stars. I must admit this movie taught me a lot of life lessons. It literally struck a chord not just with me but with many viewers. Also, it made Spain the most favourite place for all Indians to visit. But jokes apart, this film directed by Zoya Akhtar is one of its kind, and here’s why.

What Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Taught Me?

Before I dive in, let me give you a sneak peek of the film. Well, it follows the life of three besties – Kabir (Abhay Deol), Imran (Farhan Akhtar), and Arjun (Hrithik Roshan) while they are on a road trip across Spain.

1. Step out of your comfort zone

One of the central themes of the film is the adventure each of the three friends—Kabir, Imran, and Arjun chooses. It starts with deep sea diving and moves on to skydiving and running with the bulls. As a viewer, I felt that this part of the storytelling imparts a crucial life lesson about stepping out of your comfort zone. Sometimes, we must try something different, and you will definitely witness real growth when you take on real challenges.

2. Spare some time for yourself and live in the moment

If you have seen the film, you’ll know that Arjun is a workaholic. He literally brings his work on vacation, even arranging a meeting in the middle of it. Because of this, Arjun is unable to enjoy it thoroughly. But when he meets Laila (Katrina Kaif), he learns to value time.

He finally understands the importance of balancing work and life. Laila makes him realize that changing the course of life for yourself and your happiness is important. It is essential to live in the moment. What’s the point in planning a future if you are sad in the present? Believe me, I totally agree with this philosophy.

3. Value relationships

These three friends reunite after ages, and despite their differences, the movie showcases their strong bond throughout the film. Believe me, this crazy trio’s road trip is not just a vacation but a journey that rekindles their friendship. Furthermore, it helps them understand each other better. This film reminds us to cherish our friends and make time for those relationships, no matter how busy life gets.

4. It’s best to let go

One of the key subplots in ZNMD is the tension between Imran and Arjun. Their differences have grown so significant that Arjun struggles to forget the tiff, eventually affecting their friendship. However, with time, Arjun realizes the importance of moving on, and they reconcile.

Another subplot revolves around Imran’s quest to find the truth about his father, seeking closure. Through these beautiful subplots, the film highlights the necessity of resolving past conflicts and making peace with unresolved issues. This not only provides emotional relief but also helps in moving forward with a lighter heart.

5. Overcome your fears

The three besties are all set to unravel their adventurous sides. They are all scared, but they confront and fight their fears with every sport. I feel that is the biggest lesson from the film—overcome your fears.

Whether it’s Arjun facing his fear of deep-sea diving, Imran undertaking skydiving, or all three facing a near-death experience by running with the bulls. ZNMD teaches us that facing our fears head-on can lead to personal growth and a more fulfilling life.

6. Follow your passion

Arjun’s journey in the film is a testament to the importance of following one’s passion. In the film’s first part, Arjun is a workaholic investment banker with little time for anything else.

But as the story progresses, he realizes the importance of balance and starts doing activities that make him happy, such as cooking. This serves as a reminder that while professional success is essential, it should not come at the cost of personal fulfilment.

7. Understanding your life goals

One major subplot revolves around Kabir’s life. He is about to get married, and this trip is his last as a bachelor. However, the twist is that, although he loves Natasha (Kalki Koechlin), he hasn’t proposed to her, leading to a significant misunderstanding. Additionally, she transforms into a woman dependent on Kabir, which he dislikes. Kabir wants her to be independent and true to herself.

He doesn’t like this side of her. Most importantly, he never wanted to get married but is now doing it for the sake of his family. Therefore, this movie teaches the lesson of following your own life goals. It doesn’t matter if it is difficult or hurtful—ultimately, it is your life and your decisions.

8. Don’t just enjoy the destination, but enjoy the process

One key lesson from this film is to enjoy the journey rather than focus solely on the destination. Throughout the film, it’s not about the destination or picturesque locations but the lighthearted moments.

Moments like the Tomatina festival, friendship bonding, Laila and Arjun’s romance, and many others bring a smile to your face. I believe this lesson applies to life as a whole—embracing the process and experiences along the way can be more rewarding than merely achieving the end goals.

On a Parting Note…

For me, “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” is more than just a film. Instead, it’s a celebration of life and its myriad experiences. Watching the movie indeed encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, cherish relationships, live in the moment, and embrace life’s adventures. So, it is always first on the watchlist, so I literally binge-watch. Well, this is all about me. But before I sign off, let me know what you like about the film. Do comment!

Gone are the days when Hindi Film Industry would make fun of gay characters. Boys were always portrayed wearing pink or walking like girls. But times have changed. We as a society are progressing, and that can be witnessed by the kind of LGBTQ movies and web series that are being made.

I know we live in a very conservative society, where the LGBTQ community is still tagged as “abnormal,” but I don’t think it is so! I have so many friends who belong to this community, and I am very proud of them. Interestingly, June month is commemorated as PRIDE MONTH. So, I thought, why not list some of the best LGBTQ movies and web series I adore?

I believe movies are the best medium for experiencing life. Most importantly, the representation of LGBTQ characters and stories in movies and web series has significantly improved over the years.

Undoubtedly, both Hindi and English entertainment industries have produced remarkable content that highlights diverse experiences within the LGBTQ community. Believe me, these stories that I am listing are filled with love, struggle, triumph, and self-discovery and offer insightful perspectives. So, let’s get going.

Best LGBTQ Movies and Web Series to Add to Your Watchlist

Let’s explore –

1. Gulmohar

This movie has to be first on my list. A yesteryear actress Sharmila Tagore portraying the role of a queer woman is a must-watch. Her effortless acting and her expressions are priceless. Not just her but Manoj Bajpayee, Simran, and other actors have done an outstanding job.

2. The Imitation Game

This film features my favorite actor, Benedict Cumberbatch. The movie is a real-life story about cryptanalyst Alan Turing, who was a homosexual. According to Wikipedia, he is widely considered the father of theoretical computer science. However, his sexuality was the reason behind his death. And I am sure this movie will bring tears to your eyes.

3. Rainbow Rishta

My most favourite web series of all time is Rainbow Rishta. It is a docu-series with real-life characters, and you have to watch this series. I am sure it will melt your heart. You can also read my detailed review right here.

4. Brokeback Mountain

Many friends had recommended this movie, but I don’t know I missed watching it. Finally, when I did, it left me numb. First, there’s Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal—both stellar actors. Besides, they are supported by Michelle Williams and Anne Hathway, who have done a stupendous job.

The movie narrates the story of Elio and Oliver’s passionate summer romance in the Italian countryside. Believe me, the film beautifully captures the complexities of first love and self-discovery. BTW have a box of tissues by your side. I am pretty sure you are going to need that watching this emotionally touching movie.

5. Aligarh

You must start with Aligarh if you haven’t watched Manoj Bajpayee’s films. There is something about real-life stories. And if Hansal Mehta directs them, they have to be outstanding. Well, coming back to Aligarh, it is based on the true story of a professor at Aligarh Muslim University – Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras.

He was suspended because of his sexual orientation. Thus, it unravels discrimination and the right to privacy. Every scene will give you goosebumps for sure.

6. Murder In Mahim

I assure you, this is one of the best web series on the list. The web series chronicles a murder investigation in Mumbai. It also highlights the lives of LGBTQ characters and the way they lead their lives amidst societal prejudice and maintain secrecy.

The series promises to be a gripping crime thriller with significant LGBTQ representation. It is a must-watch, especially one scene where the parents accept the child’s sexuality with an open heart. Trust me, it will bring tears to your eyes.

7. Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga

After Neerja, this is one Sonam Kapoor film that I totally like. The film, directed by Shelly Chopra Dhar, tells the story of Sweety, a young woman who struggles to come out to her conservative family.

Sonam Kapoor in her non-glamorous avatar is a treat for the eyes, but her acting deserves all the applause. Believe me, I did not expect much from her, but she surpassed my expectations. This is one of the best films of her career!

8. Boys Don’t Cry

When I think of this film, I realize how cruel the world is. We blame the developing countries as conventional, but no – the LGBTQ community had a hard time in a developed nation, too!

Directed by Kimberly Peirce, this biographical film tells the story of Brandon Teena, an American transgender man who falls victim to a brutal hate crime. Hilary Swank as Brandon Teena has given a powerful performance. No doubt she earned an Academy Award for her role.

9. Dear Dad

What if one fine day, you wake up, and your dad informs you that he is Gay? Shocking, right? That’s exactly the theme of Arvind Swamy’s Dear Dad. I fell in love with him after watching Roja and Bombay. But all that adoration just multiplied with this film. The film is about introspection, revelation, and a beautiful father-son bond.

10. Badhaai Do

When Rajkummar Rao is in the lead, I doubt the movie will ever tank. I mean, he has had his share of bad films, but this film is superb. Both Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar represent the LGBTQ community, but for the world, they are a heterosexual couple. They both are in relationships with other people, but what happens when their family finds out? For that, you must watch the film.

11. Kapoor and Sons

The list of best LGBTQ movies and web series is incomplete if I fail to mention this film. A child is the apple of the eye of his parents until he follows their dreams and passion. However, once his identity of being gay is revealed, he becomes the villain of the family.

That’s how we are conditioned, as per the rules of society. Kapoor and Sons follows the story of a dysfunctional family. The story of Rahul Kapoor (Fawad Khan) narrates the plight of the LGBTQ community – especially the struggle to win acceptance of the family.

12. Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui

There are many films and web series that highlight same-sex couples. But very few talk about transgender people, and one of them is Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui. The film revolves around Manu (Ayushmann Khurrana), who runs a gym but fails to attract clients.

However, one day, he employs Zumba instructor Maanvi (Vaani Kapoor), and the tables turn. However, Maanvi is a transwoman, and when Manu knows the truth – what he does is something you must watch yourself.

On a Parting Note…

This was my list of the best LGBTQ movies and web series. Well, I must have missed many of the films and web series. But I would like to hear your recommendations. Comment below on the movies I must add to my watchlist, and I promise I will watch them. Till then, happy binging.

Dear Diary,

Thanks to the digital world, we’re privileged to learn about many celebrities, one of whom was Amar Singh Chamkila. Honestly, I did not know of him, nor had I ever heard his name before. However, this film streaming on Netflix took me on a rollercoaster ride, showcasing the life of this legendary singer.

Amar Singh Chamkila – Premises of the Film

The movie revolves around the struggles, fame, and untimely death of singer Amar Singh Chamkila. His “vulgar” lyrics brought him fame across Punjab, but they also attracted the wrath of various societal groups. But he believed he must deliver what the audiences genuinely wanted. Hence, he never changed the course of his career. He continued with his “sleazy” lyrics.

Eventually, while riding high on success, he faced significant criticism before his untimely death. He, along with his second wife Amarjot and two band members, were assassinated in 1988 by unknown assailants, and their murders remain unresolved.

What Did I Like the Most?

Diljit, Diljit, and Diljit… Besides, after Jab Harry Met Sejal and Love Aaj Kal (starring Sara and Kartik), I had lost a bit of faith in Imtiaz Ali. I wondered how a director like him could produce such disappointing films. Then came Amar Singh Chamkila, and it felt like Imtiaz’s golden days of direction were back!

The movie is thoughtfully crafted, chronicling every significant moment of Amar Singh Chamkila’s life so intimately that you feel as if you are part of his journey. The performances by the cast are simply top-notch. Even the briefest roles leave a lasting impact on the film’s narrative.

The inclusion of clips featuring the real Amar Singh Chamkila piques curiosity and encourages viewers to learn more about him. The film beautifully depicts how each event in his life left a mark on the people of Punjab.

Additionally, the end credits are fascinating; they feature real-life photos of the characters alongside their family members, adding a layer of authenticity and emotional depth.

Direction: I strongly believe that no director could have done justice to a biography like Imtiaz Ali did with this film. He has masterfully captured the most intricate moments of the lead character’s life. Not once did I feel bored. Most importantly, Imtiaz and his team have beautifully established the connection between Chamkila’s lyrics and his life experiences.

Acting: What can I say about the acting? Every actor has delivered a fantastic performance. Of course, Diljit steals the show, and deservedly so. I believe he merits all the praise. After watching the movie, I viewed some clips of the real Chamkila and realized that Diljit mastered Chamkila’s body language aesthetically. Parineeti also performed well, although her role was quite brief.

Sound and Cinematography: It’s so refreshing to see the gulley and nukkad of 1980s Punjab captured on film. Moreover, the soundtrack is lively and peppy— and why not — it is by A.R. Rahman. Yes, I must admit, it took me some time to read the subtitles and understand the lyrics. Yet, the music is soothing to both the ears and the mind.

What I Didn’t Like About the Movie?

There isn’t much to complain about. However, I felt that Parineeti’s role could have been more prominent. Despite being a close aide and, most importantly, his wife, she doesn’t really stand out. Additionally, it took me some time to read the subtitles and understand the lyrics, which was an effort, but I’m not complaining.

Over To You…

Well, that wraps up my review of Amar Singh Chamkila. I wholeheartedly urge everyone to watch it. This film is more than just a biography—it’s a deep dive into a compelling story, still shrouded in mystery. Who could have shot him? It’s so tragic that this case remains unresolved.

Moreover, just like me, I’m sure you’ll be captivated by the unique storytelling style—pure Imtiaz Ali magic—coupled with outstanding performances. This movie does an excellent job of highlighting the life stories of some forgotten figures. Don’t miss out on this extraordinary cinematic journey.

Dear Diary,

Some movies compel you to go to the theater. Otherwise, we’re content to lounge on our sofas, watching movies on OTT platforms. Dune Part Two was one such movie that I just had to see in the theater. And wow, what a film! Absolutely brilliant. If you watched and loved Dune Part One, I’m sure you’ll be thrilled with this sequel!

What Is the Basic Plot of Dune Part Two?

If you’ve seen the first installment of Dune, I’m sure you’re eagerly anticipating the sequel. Dune Part Two picks up exactly where the first part left off. This time, we see Paul Atreides, played by the talented Timothée Chalamet, forging an alliance with the Fremen on the desert planet of Arrakis.

Together, they take a stand against the malevolent House Harkonnen. Paul isn’t just an outsider now; he’s fully integrated into the Fremen army, leading daring raids against the Harkonnen’s illegal spice operations.

But the burning question remains: Is he the prophesied savior? It would be best if you witnessed the unfolding events for yourself. Trust me, it’s a cinematic experience you won’t want to miss!

What Did I Like About the Movie?

The movie is an absolute delight. If you’re a fan eagerly awaiting its release on OTT platforms, let me urge you to reconsider. Don’t waste any more time; make your way to the cinema now.

Dune Part Two is a spectacle that truly deserves to be experienced in theaters, not just on a small screen at home. Trust me, the cinematic experience elevates this film to a whole new level!

Storyline: Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, Dune Part Two doesn’t disappoint when it comes to storytelling. It’s astonishingly gripping, drawing you in from the very start. No matter how brief their appearance, each character serves a meaningful purpose in the film.

The story is full of mind-blowing twists that will leave you captivated. Some moments will make you exclaim, ‘Oh my God! What an enthralling twist!’ The narrative craftsmanship in this film is truly exceptional.

Direction: Denis Villeneuve’s direction in Dune Part Two is nothing short of phenomenal. Each frame is a visual masterpiece, a feast for the eyes.

Villeneuve masterfully balances the pacing, seamlessly weaving together thrilling action sequences and engaging dialogue. His skillful direction ensures that every moment of the film is captivating, maintaining a perfect rhythm that enthralls the audience.

Acting: What can I frankly say about the acting in this film? It’s nothing short of outstanding. The cast, featuring Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, Javier Bardem, and others, have delivered performances that are nothing less than fantastic.

The on-screen chemistry between Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet is mesmerizing, capturing all my admiration. However, a special mention must go to Rebecca Ferguson. Her portrayal of the Reverend Mother is simply breathtaking.

She brings a depth to her character that can sometimes be intimidating, yet this intensity is the essence of her role. Her performance is a standout in a film filled with exceptional acting.

Sound and Cinematography: A key element that holds the audience spellbound in Dune Part Two is its background score. It’s simply outstanding, with each tune crafted to perfection, sending chills down your spine. The cinematography is equally magnificent.

The depiction of the desert landscape, particularly the awe-inspiring sandworms, is breathtaking. The visual storytelling is so vivid and captivating that you’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat, feeling every pulse of the narrative. The synergy of sound and visuals in this film is a masterclass in cinematic art, creating an adrenaline-fueled experience that’s absolutely unforgettable.

In addition to the sound and cinematography, the costume and set design in Dune Part Two are truly enthralling. They surpass all expectations, immersing you completely in the film’s universe. The attention to detail in every costume and the intricate set design contribute to an incredibly authentic feel.

It’s as if these places and characters exist on some distant, exotic planet. The creativity and artistry behind these designs play a crucial role in bringing the world of ‘Dune’ to life, making it a visually stunning and believable experience.

Action Sequences: The action sequences in Dune Part Two are equally astonishing and a highlight of the film. From intense one-on-one combat to grand-scale war scenes, everything is executed with such realism that it’s utterly breathtaking.

The choreography of each fight and the depiction of battle scenarios are so immersive and well-crafted that they’re guaranteed to give you goosebumps. These sequences are a testament to the film’s commitment to creating a visceral and authentic cinematic experience.

What I Didn’t Like About the Movie?

Honestly, I have nothing but praise for this film – it’s that superb. In fact, I’m already eagerly awaiting the sequel. The anticipation of what happens next in this captivating story is almost too much to bear. I really can’t wait to see where they take us in the next chapter of this incredible saga!

Over To You…

Well, that wraps up my review of Dune Part Two. I wholeheartedly urge everyone to watch it. This film is more than just a cinematic experience; it’s a journey to a different world.

Besides, you’ll be immersed in a unique storytelling style underpinned by stellar direction and outstanding acting. It’s not just a movie; it’s an adventure that reshapes how we perceive epic storytelling. Don’t miss out on this extraordinary cinematic journey.

Dear Diary,

I have never been a fan of South Indian films, primarily because I believe these movies are brimming with exaggerated action and excessive “masala.” However, my perspective changed after watching a few of these films, leading me to see the films in a new light. Consequently, I’ve compiled a comprehensive list of must watch South Indian movies. Thankfully, these films are far from typical and can even rival the Hindi Film Industry.

So, let me share my list!

Which Are the Must Watch South Indian Movies?

Let’s dive in.

1. Vikram

I’ve lost count of the times I’ve watched this film. Whenever it’s aired on TV, I never miss it. In fact, Vikram is always on my watchlist whenever I’m in the mood for a movie. While Kamal Haasan shines as the protagonist, you’ll be captivated by the antagonist, Vijay Sethupathi. His performance in this film made me a fan, and I’m confident you’ll appreciate his talent, possibly even more than any other character in the movie.

2. Super Deluxe

After falling in love with Vijay Sethupathi’s performance, I began exploring more of his films and stumbled upon the brilliant ‘Super Deluxe.’ This hyperlink film features a plethora of talented stars. While I admit to being partial towards Sethupathi’s part, the entire cast, including Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Fahadh Faasil, delivers outstanding performances, each playing a crucial role. ‘Super Deluxe’ is undeniably one of the must-watch South Indian movies.

3. Jai Bhim

Since my childhood, I had been aware of the deep-rooted issue of caste-based atrocities, yet urban life shielded me from witnessing its direct impacts. However, these injustices persist in rural areas, a reality poignantly depicted in the film. It opened my eyes to a real-life incident from 1993, fought in court by Justice K. Chandru.

The film skillfully addresses police bias and state-sanctioned violence against marginalized communities. The performances, particularly by Suriya and Lijomol Jose, are exceptional. Every courtroom scene is so powerful that it’s bound to give you goosebumps. This movie is a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles against discrimination and injustice in society.

4. Captain Miller

I’ve kept an eye on some of Dhanush’s films from the South Indian industry. In comparison, I found his Hindi movies somewhat more appealing, often less action-centric; his South Indian films seemed overrun with exaggerated action, leading me to avoid them generally.

However, everything changed with ‘Captain Miller.’ From start to finish, this film had me completely hooked. Refreshingly free from over-the-top action sequences, it boasts an engaging and relatable storyline. In his role as Captain Miller, Dhanush delivers a fantastic performance that marks a delightful departure from his usual roles.

5. Kantara

Do I even need to elaborate on this film? It has garnered numerous accolades and captured hearts universally. Every frame is crafted so brilliantly that it kept me glued to my seat. Honestly, I was initially unaware of Rishab Shetty’s remarkable talent until my sibling enlightened me about his popularity, leaving me utterly spellbound. As for the film, the action sequences are a must-see – they’re guaranteed to give you goosebumps. A huge round of applause for Rishab Shetty’s outstanding performance.

6. Jana Gana Mana

I regret initially associating Prithviraj Sukumaran solely with ‘Aiyyaa,’ a film often considered one of the decade’s worst. My only impression of him was from this movie, where I saw him as just a glamorous figure, leading me to assume he wasn’t a popular or talented actor mistakenly.

However, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Prithviraj is, in fact, an actor of immense caliber, as clearly demonstrated in ‘Jana Gana Mana.’ The storyline of this film, with its intriguing twists, will keep you engrossed. Prithviraj’s performance is a treat to watch and showcases his remarkable talent.

7. Salaar

When I think of Prabhas, ‘Baahubali’ immediately comes to mind. This film franchise undoubtedly became his signature, and following its success, his subsequent films struggled to create the same impact. However, everything changed with the release of ‘Salaar’. Initially, I anticipated a typical South Indian film, replete with over-the-top action and melodrama. To my surprise, it was nothing like this!

‘Salaar’ boasts a compelling storyline and an impressive cast, except Shruti Hassan, whose performance felt a bit forced and her expressions somewhat exaggerated. In contrast, Prabhas delivers a composed performance, maintaining a cool demeanor even in action scenes. The film is further elevated by the presence of Prithviraj Sukumaran, adding a layer of undeniable talent. Watching these power-packed actors come together in such an engaging movie is a treat!

8. Hi Nanna

If you’re in the mood for a deeply emotional and touching film, this is the one to watch! It beautifully chronicles the heartwarming bond between a father and daughter. The story is so exquisitely woven that it’ll have you saying “aww” at every turn. The chemistry between Mrunal Thakur and Nani is a must-watch, and I’m certain you’ll binge-watch this film. However, the real highlight is the adorable Kiara Khanna, who will absolutely melt your heart with her performance.

9. Sita Ramam

If you’re tired of clichéd love stories with predictable plots and overdone romantic scenes, “Sita Ramam” is a breath of fresh air. It shatters these conventions, offering a pure, heartwarming love story unlike any I’ve seen in years. The chemistry between Mrunal Thakur and Dulquer Salman is simply beautiful. In fact, my admiration for Dulquer Salman began with this film. For those who cherish romantic movies, “Sita Ramam” is an absolute must-watch.

10. Ponniyin Selvan

As a fan of historical dramas, I’m quite selective about the films I watch, seeking meaningful and impactful ones. Thankfully, “Ponniyin Selvan” (PS 1 & 2) does not disappoint. Directed by the acclaimed Mani Ratnam, the film excels not just in direction but in every aspect – from stunning cinematography and picturesque locations to powerful acting.

While I haven’t always admired Aishwarya Rai, her performance in this film is commendable. Familiar with only Vikram and Trisha among the cast, I was completely taken aback by the performances of others, particularly Jayam Ravi, Karthi, and Jayaram.

The story is exceptional, offering a glimpse into a fascinating history chapter. Initially, the names of the kings were unfamiliar to me, but the film provided an engaging way to revisit and deepen my understanding of history. I believe this is the true strength of cinema – its ability to educate and leave a lasting impression.

11. King of Kotha

Having become a fan of Dulquer Salman after watching “Sita Ramam,” I eagerly seized the opportunity to watch “King of Kotha.” This action-packed movie impressively maintains its momentum throughout, ensuring there’s never a dull moment. Unlike many action heroes who often resort to exaggerated expressions and excessive howling, Dulquer’s performance is refreshingly subtle and compelling. His portrayal is a visual delight. The movie excels in its execution, boasting an engaging plot filled with intriguing twists.

12. Trance

Last but certainly not least, I delved into a movie as intriguing as its title suggests. My journey began with “Pushpa,” where Fahadh Faasil’s performance, though limited in screen presence, captivated me and led me to explore his other works. It was a stroke of luck when I stumbled upon this particular film.

As a neo-noir psychological thriller, it perfectly embodies its genre. Fahadh deserves applause for his electrifying acting. But it’s not just him – other cast members like Gautham Vasudev Menon, Dileesh Pothan, and Nazriya Nazim also deliver justice to their roles. This movie hooked me from the start, and I’m confident it will have the same effect on you!

Over to you…

This concludes my list of must-watch South Indian movies. I’m aware that there are many other films out there that I might have overlooked. My exploration of South Indian cinema is ongoing, and this list will likely grow even longer in the near future.

Significantly, these films have shattered my preconceived notion that South Indian movies are solely about “masala” and exaggerated action sequences. They possess a profound depth in their direction, narration, and depiction, which has been a delightful discovery for me.

Besides, I’m always looking for more recommendations, so please share your favorites with me. I’ll make sure to add them to my watch list!!

Dear Diary,

It’s Valentine’s Day already, and I gear up yet again to celebrate this special day with great aplomb. Growing up, I watched romantic movies, thinking all those stories were true in real life. But I was wrong. Suddenly, an era dawned where filmmakers started directing more realistic movies that included heartbreaks, cheating, abuse, etc. However, I still love watching those romantic love tales. Hence, I decided to compile a list of romantic movies to watch on Valentine’s Day.

So, let’s get started!

My Personal Favorite Romantic Movies To Watch On Valentine’s Day

Before I kickstart this journey, let me share that these movies are a blend of both regional and English films. So, feel free to choose any that pique your interest, and remember—we now have ‘subtitles.’ Just kidding, let’s dive in.

Sita Ramam

The buzz around this movie was undeniable, and now I understand why. It stands out as one of the best romantic movies to watch on Valentine’s Day but be warned—you’ll need a box of tissues by your side. It’s also among the most emotional films I’ve encountered recently.

Originally, in Telugu, don’t let language be a barrier, as we have subtitles to bridge the gap. And don’t worry, the performances of the lead actors, Dulquer Salmaan and Mrunal Thakur, are so powerful they’ll move you to tears all on their own.

Ved

If you adore the couple Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza—and I’m sure you do—then this film is an absolute must-watch. Fortunately, they’ve returned to the silver screen together after a long hiatus. Watching a couple who is madly in love with each other in real life grace the big screen again is truly a blessing.

Their chemistry, presence, and acting are simply outstanding. Genelia’s proficiency in Marathi was a revelation to me; she has breathed life into her role with such vibrancy. As for Riteish, words fail to capture his performance adequately. Released in both Hindi and Marathi, this movie is a must-watch for any romantic movie enthusiast.

Satyaprem Ki Katha

Kartik Aaryan, an outsider in the Hindi film industry, has certainly managed to captivate audiences with some of his visually appealing and intriguing films. Known for fitting perfectly into the ‘chocolate boy’ persona, his role in ‘Satyaprem ki Katha’ stands out as refreshingly unique compared to his typical characters.

In this film, he portrays a die-hard lover who also champions women’s rights—not just in words but through his actions, embodying the change our society yearns for. Amidst this is woven a beautiful romantic love story that’s absolutely unmissable.

Kiara Advani, as usual, showcases her acting prowess and truly shines, making her performance a highlight of the film. This is my personal favorite among romantic movies to watch on Valentine’s Day.

Hi Nanna

Prepare for a ’tissue paper affair’ with this movie. From the moment it started, I was caught in an emotional whirlwind, sometimes crying out of happiness and, at others, sadness. But through it all, this film completely won my heart. ‘Hi Nanna’ is a Telugu-language romantic drama featuring Nani and Mrunal Thakur in lead roles.

However, it’s the little sweetheart Kiara Khanna who steals the show. She’s the cutest soul who will make you fall in love with love itself. Mrunal Thakur is a vision of elegance on screen, bringing a blissful presence with her acting. And Nani, as always, is a heartthrob, captivating with every scene. This movie is a must-watch, but remember, don’t forget to keep a box of tissues by your side.

Me Before You

Not all love stories end with ‘happily ever after.’ In fact, not all stories conclude with the boy getting the girl. This film beautifully illustrates that reality. It might not fit the traditional mold of a romantic film, but it offers so much more. Love isn’t just about spending time together; often, actions can speak louder than words.

Experiencing these profound themes was made possible by the remarkable performances of the leading stars, Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin. Having seen Emilia portray the fearless Daenerys Targaryen, I could only picture her in such a role. However, this film allowed me to discover her romantic side, showcasing her versatility as an actress. This is undoubtedly a must-watch romantic movie for Valentine’s Day.

Blue Valentine

Some stories don’t always have sweet endings, and ‘Blue Valentine’ is a prime example of that. Watching this film left me speechless. The lead stars, Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams deliver performances that are nothing short of outstanding.

When they cry, you can’t help but cry along with them. The struggles of a couple, the complexities of marriage, and how one navigates these challenges are at the heart of this film, and they’re all depicted beautifully. My heart aches every time I watch ‘Blue Valentine.’ It’s a poignant reminder of love’s raw and real aspects, making it an unforgettable viewing experience.

Hasee Toh Phasee

This movie just recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. OMG, I can’t believe my favorite has completed such a successful stint—and it absolutely deserves all the love and acclaim. I initially watched this film in the theater without any expectations, and wow, it completely bowled me over. Since then, I catch it every time it’s on TV, having watched it more than 50 times by now.

This film stands out as my all-time favorite romantic movie featuring Parineeti Chopra, and Sidharth Malhotra is just as charming. But it’s not just about the lead pair; the entire cast has delivered outstanding performances. Given the chance, I’d happily continue to watch it—maybe even for the 100th time!

Chandramukhi

I’ve always believed that some emotions are best captured by regional cinema. That’s why the first two recommendations on my list of romantic movies to watch on Valentine’s Day are indeed regional films. In Hindi cinema, I often encounter a touch of overacting and excessive drama.

In contrast, regional films embrace more realism and are set in authentic environments. One standout example is ‘Chandramukhi,’ which delves into the romance between a Tamasha singer and dancer named Chandra and a rising politician, Daulat.

Their love story is compelling, enhanced by the film’s soothing music. While I haven’t always been a big fan of Adinath Kothare, his performance in this film is commendable. And as usual, Amruta Khanvilkar radiates divine beauty, continuing to captivate me with her talent.

In this movie, she truly is a blessing. Above all, the chemistry between the leads is simply WOW, making ‘Chandramukhi’ a must-watch for anyone looking to explore the depths of love through cinema.

Love & Other Drugs

Anne Hathaway… Oh, Anne Hathaway – words can hardly capture my obsession with this actress. She is one of the finest talents you’ll ever encounter in the film industry. Complementing her is the ever-charming Jake Gyllenhaal, whose presence on screen can make anyone fall in love with him instantly. As for the film’s premise, it’s beautifully crafted and unfolds in completely unexpected ways.

For those searching for genuine romance, this movie is a must-add to your list. Trust me, it will reignite your belief in ‘true love.’

50 First Dates

This movie remains evergreen, resonating with audiences across all generations. Frankly, it was this film that made me fall in love with Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. With its unique angle and story, this movie is an absolute must-watch! The way it showcases how true love triumphs is what makes it so captivating.

I’m confident that once you watch it, you’ll find yourself returning to it over and over again. At least, that’s what happened to me.

The Shape of Water

Did you know this film received an impressive thirteen nominations at the 90th Academy Awards? Beyond that, it has garnered many accolades, and it’s easy to see why. This movie earns its spot on the list of romantic movies to watch on Valentine’s Day because it is truly outstanding. Not only does it boast an incredible storyline, but the actors’ performances are also remarkable.

Throughout the film, I was completely engrossed, constantly wondering what would happen next. It managed to keep me glued to the screen. While some stories take the road less traveled, this film goes even further—it’s both unconventional and supreme.

Marriage Story

Love isn’t always a bed of roses; it comes with its thorns, some of which are sharp enough to tear you apart. Navigating through such adversities is crucial. ‘Marriage Story’ delves into the turmoil a couple faces and their journey to cope, forming the heart of the narrative.

Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver deliver outstanding performances, bringing the film’s emotional struggles to life. It has rightfully received numerous accolades, deserving every bit of the applause. I found myself moved to tears throughout the movie. Indeed, it stands as one of the best romantic movies to watch on Valentine’s Day, showcasing the complexities of love and the resilience it demands.

The Fault in Our Stars

You might think I overlooked adding this film to my list of romantic movies to watch on Valentine’s Day. Oh no, you’re mistaken. I could never—truly, never—omit this movie. It was remade in Hindi as ‘Dil Bechara,’ starring the late Sushant Singh Rajput. While ‘Dil Bechara‘ was beautiful and touching, it didn’t quite capture the profound emotional depth of the original.

Importantly, if you can watch this film without shedding a tear, then, my friend, you may need to question your status as a die-hard romantic. This film is guaranteed to make you cry, not just from sadness but from joy as well. The actors have done an outstanding job of captivating the audience, weaving a story that touches the heart most profoundly.

Over to you…

So, this is my favorite list of romantic movies to watch on Valentine’s Day. I hope you find it as captivating as I do. As a die-hard romantic, I deeply connect with these films and would like to know if you feel the same. Which movies are on your list to watch with your Valentine?

Dear Dairy,

2023 was indeed a remarkable year with some fantastic Hindi film releases, and I’m eagerly manifesting an even more exciting and filmy 2024. However, I’m not looking forward to the same old boring plots, poorly written stories, lackluster character development, mundane music, and the like.

What I’m yearning for is a specific type of cinematic experience – one that not only entertains but also enlightens, challenges, and reflects the diverse spectrum of human experiences. So, here’s a glimpse into the types of movies I’m hoping to see in 2024.

Filmy 2024: What I crave for?

Let’s dive in.

Focus on fewer sex scenes and more content

It seems that explicit sexual content has become the norm in films lately. It’s as if our movies can’t succeed without it. But why is this the case? Aren’t there more dimensions to storytelling? Often, it feels like there’s an overload of vulgarity that doesn’t add to the plot, and frankly, it becomes tiresome.

I find myself bored with films that include unnecessary sexual scenes, seemingly just for the sake of profit. I yearn for movies with meaningful content, where every scene truly serves a purpose in the narrative.

Showing the plight of middle-class

Having seen ‘Student of the Year – 1’, it struck me how the portrayal of Siddharth Malhotra’s character might be misleading. Just because he enters on a normal bike, it doesn’t necessarily mean his character comes from a middle-class background.

This portrayal contrasts starkly with films like ‘Lunchbox,’ ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla,’ and the more recent ‘The Great Indian Family,’ where the depiction of a typical family feels more authentic and grounded without any showoff.

I find myself increasingly weary of movies that only focus on the struggles of the underprivileged. In reality, it’s often the middle class that bears a significant brunt of societal pressures and expectations.

I wish to see more films that realistically portray the middle-class lifestyle and their unique challenges in meeting societal expectations and managing their livelihoods. It’s a perspective that’s rich with stories yet often overlooked in cinema.

More meaningful comedies

I long for more meaningful comedies in our cinema. Just the other day, I watched ‘Fukrey’ and found myself utterly bored. The comedy felt forced, and the plot was trite and unoriginal. They seemed to think they could easily amuse the audience, but it was a far cry from the laughter I was hoping for.

I am yearning for the kind of comedy that Priyadarshan’s films offer. Those movies were genuine comedies, where every scene was a riot of laughter. Films like ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ also captured this essence beautifully, making me laugh in every scene. It’s that kind of effortless, heartfelt humor I miss and wish to see more of in upcoming films.

Real struggles of the younger generation

Teenagers today truly go through a tumultuous journey. They face a myriad of complications, often finding themselves at a crossroads without clear solutions. It’s a phase of life that’s incredibly complex and yet so pivotal.

I would absolutely love to see more movies centered around this delicate age, similar to films like ‘Udaan,’ ‘Stanley ka Dabba,’ ‘Chillar Party,’ ‘Archies,’ ‘Friday Night Plan,’ and ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahaan.’

This generation is uniquely positioned at the intersection of growing up and the digital age, often feeling lost in the shuffle. Movies focusing on their experiences can provide a window into their world, showcasing the reality of their struggles and triumphs.

Such films not only offer a form of validation and understanding for teenagers but also provide invaluable insights for others. It’s a narrative deeply needed in our cinema today.

Exploring horror genre

I’ve never been a fan of horror movies, but I recently watched the latest from the 1920 series – ‘1920: Horrors of the Heart’. To my disappointment, it turned out to be the worst film I’ve seen in 2023. It’s a stark contrast to the days when genuinely chilling films like ‘Raaz,’ ‘Raat,’ ‘Bhoot,’ ‘Pari,’ ‘Chhorii,’ and ‘Bulbbul’ were made.

It seems that the essence of true horror has been lost in recent cinema. Now, it feels like these movies lean more towards comedy than actually delivering scares. The nuanced art of creating suspense and fear is fading, replaced by predictable jump scares and a lack of depth in storytelling.

I miss the days when horror films captivated us with their eerie atmospheres and compelling narratives. I miss covering my eyes and ears while watching a horror film!

Explorations of the digital age

It’s astonishing how deeply digitalization has permeated our lives. It’s reached a point where a single day without our phones seems unimaginable. This overwhelming dependence on digital technology is something I find both fascinating and alarming.

I’m particularly intrigued by stories that delve into the intricate relationship between humans and technology. I want to see films that explore the challenges of digital privacy and the profound psychological effects of social media on our lives.

Recently, I watched a movie called “Hacked,” hoping it would offer some insightful perspectives on these issues. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. Far from being enlightening or engaging, it actually detracted from my enjoyment – it was that bad.

There’s a real need for movies that thoughtfully and accurately address the complexities of our digital age, and I’m still waiting for one that does justice to this crucial and relevant topic.

Vouching for family entertainment

I find myself longing for movies like ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’ and ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ – films that bring people of all ages together with their heartwarming narratives and family-centric themes.

These movies were more than just entertainment; they were celebrations of familial bonds filled with laughter, life lessons, and a deep sense of togetherness.

As I look forward to a filmy 2024, I’m manifesting a resurgence of this heartfelt, wholesome family entertainment. I yearn for stories that resonate across generations, ones that blend humor and wisdom in a way that appeals to both the young and the old. Simply like Dil Dhadakne Do!

There’s something incredibly special about a film that can gather the entire family around the screen, sharing moments of joy and learning together. Here’s hoping for a return to those cherished family movie nights with narratives that touch our hearts and bring us closer.

Movies highlighting the plight of the environmental crisis

I’ve noticed a stark contrast between Hollywood and the Hindi film industry in terms of environmental storytelling. Hollywood has produced numerous films highlighting the repercussions of environmental hazards, effectively blending compelling narratives with crucial environmental themes.

However, in Bollywood, there seems to be a predominant focus on unreal action movies, often overlooking the pressing issue of environmental conservation. I strongly feel the need for Hindi cinema to embrace this critical theme. I’m eager to see films that not only raise awareness about environmental issues but also inspire actionable change.

I envision narratives that skillfully intertwine human stories with the urgent need to preserve our planet. Such films can play a vital role in educating and motivating the public, fostering a deeper understanding and respect for our environment.

Do not celebrate antagonism

Watching ‘Pushpa’ really got me thinking about how we often glorify villains in cinema. It’s intriguing yet perplexing to see a character who actively cuts down trees being celebrated. And then there’s ‘Animal,’ which seems to exalt bloodshed and violence. It makes me question the kind of messages these films are sending.

I understand that, to some extent, showcasing such characters is a way of reflecting reality – these types of people do exist in the world. However, I’m conflicted about the extent to which we should be glorifying them.

Yes, cinema is a form of art that often mirrors life, and it’s important to portray various facets of society. But I believe there should be a balance. We need to be mindful of not inadvertently promoting harmful actions or making heroes out of those who engage in destructive behaviors.

It’s a delicate line between representation and glorification, and I hope future films manage this balance more responsibly. Maybe it’s time we start rethinking the narratives we applaud and the characters we elevate to hero status.

Focus on mental illness

There’s something truly special about movies like ‘Dear Zindagi’ and ‘Tamasha‘ that capture the complexities of mental health with such sensitivity and insight.

Each time ‘Dear Zindagi’ comes on TV, I find myself drawn to its profound storytelling. ‘Tamasha’ brilliantly portrayed Veer’s struggle with Borderline Personality Disorder, while ‘Karthik Calling Karthik’ offered an outstanding depiction of mental illness.

And ‘Chhichhore’ – it was not just entertaining but also deeply impactful in the way it addressed serious issues. I wholeheartedly believe our audiences need more films in this genre. Mental health is still a topic shrouded in stigma and misunderstanding in many parts of society.

Films like these not only entertain but also educate and open up crucial conversations about mental well-being. It’s high time that cinema is used as a reflective mirror, showing audiences the importance of mental health and encouraging empathy and understanding.

More such movies could be instrumental in changing perceptions and fostering a more accepting and supportive environment for mental health issues.

Showcasing more meaningful biographies

‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ was an eye-opener for me, leaving me utterly spellbound. It’s somewhat embarrassing to admit, but I had no prior knowledge about Nambi Narayanan. Similarly, I knew very little about Neerja Bhanot before watching her biopic.

These films have made me realize the power of cinema in bringing the stories of remarkable, yet often unrecognized, individuals to the forefront.

Looking ahead to a filmy 2024, I am passionately advocating for more meaningful biopics. There are so many unsung heroes and hidden gems whose extraordinary contributions have gone largely unnoticed. Their stories deserve to be told and celebrated.

Films like these not only educate and inspire us but also pay homage to these incredible souls. I truly believe that the Indian film industry has the potential to unearth and bring these inspiring stories to light, offering audiences both entertainment and enlightenment.

Embracing innovative storytelling

‘Tumbbad’ completely captivated me despite my usual aversion to horror films. Its unique storytelling and haunting atmosphere have drawn me back to it time and again. This film is a testament to the kind of innovative and compelling cinema that truly resonates with me.

When I think about movies like ‘Swades,’ ‘Gangs of Wasseypur,’ ‘Ugly,’ and ‘Masaan,’ I realize the profound impact that thoughtful, well-crafted stories can have. Each of these films has a distinct voice and a powerful narrative that stays with you long after the credits roll.

As we look towards a filmy 2024, I find myself yearning for more such movies – stories that are meaningful, soul-stirring and break away from the mold of conventional cinema. I crave films that challenge the norm, provoke thought, and evoke deep emotions.

Enough of the likes of ‘Pathaan’ or ‘Jawaan’ and their formulaic plots. It’s time for cinema that dares to be different and has the power to shake the very core of our being.

Producing fantasy and sci-fi that reflect current social issues

The VFX in ‘Adipurush’ left me quite disappointed – it was a stark reminder of how crucial the quality of visual effects is in today’s cinema, especially for genres like fantasy and science fiction. On the other hand, ‘Brahmastra’ was a refreshing change, setting a new standard for Indian cinema in terms of visual storytelling.

As I look forward to 2024, I’m hopeful for more films like ‘Brahmastra’ that skillfully blend advanced VFX with meaningful narratives. The potential of fantasy and science fiction genres to explore and comment on vital social issues like inequality, justice, and human rights is immense.

These genres can offer more than just escapism; they can be powerful mediums to delve into and reflect upon the pressing issues of our times.

Please avoid nonsensical action

I couldn’t help but feel incredulous watching a scene in ‘Tiger 3’ where Shahrukh Khan, in guest appearance, jumps from a rope and miraculously lands on a helicopter to confront the villain. It was moments like these that made me lose hope in the rest of the movie.

It’s high time we moved away from such nonsensical and over-the-top action sequences. As a member of the audience, it’s clear to me when certain actions are blatantly impossible. These exaggerated stunts often do more to detract from the film’s credibility than add to its excitement.

I want filmmakers to respect the intelligence of their audience and refrain from presenting such implausible scenarios. Realism in action scenes can greatly enhance the quality of a film, making it more relatable and engaging.

It’s a plea for more grounded and believable action in cinema, steering clear of absurdity and maintaining a semblance of reality.

Place greater emphasis on offbeat actors in film casting and narratives

I’ve found myself increasingly drawn to the exceptional talent of actors like Pankaj Tripathi, Vikrant Massey, Radhika Apte, and Sanjay Mishra. Their performances have consistently been a breath of fresh air in an industry often overshadowed by more mainstream, ‘glitzy’ actors.

Their ability to bring characters to life with such authenticity and depth is truly commendable. As we look forward to a filmy 2024, I am eagerly hoping to see more of these talented artists in lead roles. They’ve already given us some remarkable films showcasing their versatile acting skills.

It’s time for our film industry to break away from the usual stereotypes and embrace these offbeat actors who have so much to offer. Their realistic acting style not only enhances the quality of the films but also brings a sense of relatability to the stories being told.

Over to you…

As I reflect on what I desire from filmy 2024, it’s clear that I’m yearning for films that go beyond mere entertainment. I want movies that provoke thought, evoke empathy, and inspire change. These are the kinds of films that stay with us long after we leave the theater. Also, the ones that challenge our perspectives and touch our hearts!

Dear Diary,

What is life without the cherished presence of friends? Friends are those who share in our laughter, stand beside us in conflicts, and bestow upon us immeasurable joy and happiness. This beautiful tapestry of friendship is vividly portrayed in the ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan’ movie.

However, the film goes beyond just depicting these bonds. It poses a thought-provoking question: Are the dynamics of friendship the same in the digital age?

‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan’ movie delves into the intricate ways the digital era is reshaping the very essence of friendships. In a world dominated by digital platforms like Tinder and Instagram, the film explores how these modern tools are influencing and transforming our traditional notions of friendship.

It’s a journey that examines the complexities of maintaining connections in an age where digital interactions often overshadow face-to-face communication.

Kho Gaye Hum Kahan movie – basic plot

The film ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan’ centers around the lives of three inseparable best friends – Imaad Ali, Ahana Singh, and Neil Pereira, portrayed by Siddhant, Ananya, and Adarsh, respectively. Each character and actor add a unique flavor to the narrative, enriching the story with their distinct backgrounds and aspirations.

Imaad Ali, with his sharp wit and engaging personality, lights up stages as a stand-up comedian. His journey in the world of comedy provides a glimpse into the life of an artist who skillfully balances humor and reality. Neil Pereira, on the other hand, is a driven personal trainer, passionately making his mark in the fitness industry.

His dedication and hard work shine a light on the demanding and competitive world of personal fitness. Ahana Singh, an MBA graduate from the prestigious Harvard University, embarks on her career as a corporate consultant, bringing her sharp intellect and strategic thinking to the corporate world.

Her journey provides insight into the challenges and triumphs faced by a young professional in a demanding corporate environment.

What stands out in Kho Gaye Hum Kahan?

Upon seeing Ananya Pandey in the trailer for ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan,’ I initially had my reservations about watching it. However, she is accompanied by an incredibly talented cast, including Siddhant Chaturvedi and Adarsh Gourav. To my pleasant surprise, Ananya not only holds her own but also shines alongside these skilled actors.

This reminds me of what I mentioned in a previous post about women-centric films in Bollywood and Tara Sutaria – “sometimes, all it takes is the right opportunity at the right moment.” Post ‘Gehraiyaan,’ it seems Ananya has seized another such opportunity to showcase her evolving talent. Believe me, she embraces it with full commitment.

As for the male leads, what can I say? They are fantastic, as usual. Both Siddhant and Adarsh deliver their roles with supreme finesse. Their effortless acting is a real treat to watch and adds significantly to the film’s appeal.

Now, turning to the story itself, if you’re of the belief that ‘ek ladka ladki kabhi dost nahi ho sakta‘ (a boy and a girl can never be just friends), this film challenges that notion head-on. Refreshingly, there’s no romantic subplot between the friends.

Instead, the film focuses on their pure, unadulterated friendship. It’s a testament to the strength and depth of their bond that they always have each other’s backs through fights and love.

Moreover, ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan’ does an exceptional job of highlighting the disadvantages of social media. It’s a narrative that’s especially relevant in today’s digital age, where social media is the backbone when it comes to shaping relationships and personal identities. The film skillfully balances the portrayal of these challenges with the enduring value of genuine, heartfelt friendship.

Amidst this, the aspect that makes this film watchable is its approach to storytelling. It doesn’t resort to preachy messages; instead, it presents the reality in a raw and unfiltered manner. The film subtly imparts life lessons without dictating any rules, allowing the audience to draw their conclusions from the experiences and interactions of the characters.

This nuanced approach to storytelling enhances the film’s impact, making it not just a cinematic experience but also a reflective journey for the audience.

Performance of the actors

The performances in ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan’ are a testament to the actors’ immense talent and dedication. Each of the three leads – Ananya Pandey, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Adarsh Gourav – have delivered some of their best work in this film.

Ananya Pandey, particularly, was a delightful surprise, especially considering her previous role in ‘Student of the Year 2.’ She brings a fresh energy and depth to her character that is both unexpected and impressive.

However, it must be acknowledged that Siddhant and Adarsh, with their commanding presence and nuanced acting, do tend to overshadow Ananya in certain aspects of the film. Choosing the best among them is a tough call, as each actor brings something unique and compelling to the table.

Siddhant’s portrayal of a stand-up comedian is a highlight of the film. His comedic timing is impeccable, and his segments are both funny and engaging – definitely a must-watch. Adarsh, on the other hand, is effortlessly natural in every scene. He manages to hold his own, exuding a strong presence even in the most intense and stressful scenes.

Kalki Koechlin, portraying Simran Kohli, adds yet another layer of excellence to the film. Her chemistry with Siddhant is captivating, and her performance is a treat to watch.

What did I hate about the Kho Gaye Hum Kahan Movie?

I didn’t find much to dislike in ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan.’ Still, I did feel that some scenes, particularly those involving Rohan Gurbaxani, who plays Rohan Bhatia – Ananya Pandey’s character’s boyfriend – were a bit too prolonged.

As for the music, while it wasn’t outstanding, it was nevertheless soothing. However, one aspect of the film that stood out to me was its portrayal of influencers.

At times, the film showed the judgmental side of this culture. However, I think it’s important to understand that for many influencers, this is more than just a platform for self-expression. It’s their job, and for some, it’s their livelihood.

Over to you…

The most impactful line for me from the ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan’ movie was, “Find your tribe; agar dost hai toh followers ki kya zaroorat hai.” This line truly captured my heart. It resonated deeply with me, reminding me of the invaluable presence of real friends in a world where social media followers are often mistakenly equated with meaningful relationships.

I loved the movie so much that I’m already planning to watch it again. I must admit, it’s not just a film for me. Indeed, it struck a personal chord, reminding me of my own ‘tribe’ and how they’ve been my support system through various challenges. Furthermore, it’s a beautiful reminder of the importance of cherishing genuine connections over virtual ones.

If any of you have seen the film, I’d like to hear your thoughts on it. How did you find it? Did any particular moment or line stand out to you as it did for me? It’s always interesting to see how different aspects of a movie resonate with different people, and I’m curious to know how ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan’ impacted you and your views on friendship in the digital age.

Dear Diary,

As 2024 dawns, reflecting on the past year reveals it was a rollercoaster for the film industry, marked by new records and remarkable releases. While many focus on celebrating the best movies of 2023, I’ve decided to take a unique route and delve into the other side of cinema – the worst films of 2023.

Fascinatingly, even IMDb has curated a list of the top 100 movies that missed the mark. Admittedly, I haven’t seen them all, but I’ve experienced a fair share. So, I’m putting together my own list of the year’s underwhelming films, hoping it might strike a chord with you, too.

The Worst Films of 2023 You Should Definitely Avoid

Let’s dive in –

Fast X

Topping my list of the worst films of 2023 is none other than ‘Fast X.’ Despite not being an ardent fan of action movies, I held a flicker of excitement for this one, only to have it thoroughly extinguished. The film’s departure from reality was one thing, but the sheer extent of it was another.

The most glaring question that kept running through my mind was, after all the high-octane accidents and chaos, how is it that none of the characters even sport a scratch? Suspension of disbelief is one thing, but ‘Fast X’ took it to an unbelievable extreme.

It’s one thing to craft a film with over-the-top action but quite another to completely ignore basic realism. This was a letdown on a whole new level!

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

My love affair with Marvel movies is unwavering; I haven’t missed a single one of their cinematic offerings. However, I must confess, the ‘Ant-Man’ series never quite captured my heart. I’ve always found it somewhat lackluster and a tad too far-fetched.

This sentiment was only intensified with ‘Quantumania.’ To put it bluntly, it was a disappointment. The film felt like a haphazard assembly with no solid storyline, subpar direction, and an overall sense of disarray. It’s a rare instance where my Marvel enthusiasm met its match – and not in a good way. ‘Quantumania’ just didn’t do it for me, joining the ranks of the less memorable entries in the Marvel Universe.

Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan

I recently watched Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, a movie that left me thoroughly unimpressed – it was, frankly, BAD! Within the first few minutes, it became abundantly clear that this film lacked any real substance or essence.

It seemed as though the actors were merely going through the motions, performing solely because they were contractually obligated to do so. And then there’s Salman Khan – I found myself questioning the purpose of his role in the film.

It felt like an unnecessary and torturous addition to an already lackluster movie. This was one cinematic experience I could have certainly done without!

Adipurush

There was an immense buildup surrounding this movie – the star-studded cast, the touted VFX, and the much-talked-about dialogues. Yet, as an audience member, what did I end up with? A complete letdown. The film turned out to be a sheer waste of money and time, leaving a gaping void of disappointment.

Initially, as the movie kicked off, I remember wondering why it had received such criticism; it seemed quite promising. But as the plot unfolded, my optimism quickly dwindled. The narrative became a jumbled mess, reminiscent of watching “Planet of the Apes,” but with less coherence and subpar VFX.

Despite its availability on streaming platforms, I implore you, with utmost sincerity, please steer clear of it. In my opinion, it’s unequivocally one of the worst films of 2023.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

I have always had a soft spot for films that blend mystery with history, and Indiana Jones has been a favorite character of mine for as long as I can remember.

“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” holds a special place in my heart – believe it or not, I’ve watched it over 20 times! So, you can imagine the level of excitement I had for this new film in a similar vein.

However, my anticipation quickly turned to dismay. From the moment the film started, I found myself engulfed in boredom. It’s disheartening, really.

Bawaal

I’ve never been particularly enamored with Varun Dhawan, even though he delivered a hit with “Badlapur.” For that film, I attribute much of the success to the director’s skill in eliciting such a strong performance from him. This belief reinforces my view that a lot rests on the director’s shoulders in shaping a film’s impact.

However, in the case of “Bawaal,” directed by Nitesh Tiwari – known for successes like “Chillar Party” – I felt let down. Despite his previous hits, “Bawaal” didn’t live up to expectations. The film, in my opinion, was poorly crafted. It lacked a coherent flow and failed to establish a meaningful connection with the audience. It’s a clear example of how even talented directors can sometimes miss the mark.

Mumbaikar

“Mumbaikar” has cemented my belief that a stellar cast alone cannot rescue a film. Despite featuring an ensemble of talented actors like Vikrant Massey, Ranveer Shorey, and, notably, Vijay Sethupathi, the film was an absolute letdown. Calling it ‘worst ‘is an understatement.

It’s baffling how such a promising lineup of actors couldn’t salvage this cinematic debacle. The film, unfortunately, stands as one of the biggest disasters of 2023. It’s a stark reminder that a successful movie needs more than just big names – a cohesive plot, strong direction, and effective storytelling are equally, if not more, crucial.

Kuttey

“Kuttey” serves as yet another example of how an impressive ensemble cast isn’t a guaranteed recipe for success. The film boasted a lineup of acclaimed actors – Tabu, Arjun Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Konkona Sen Sharma, Radhika Madan, and Kumud Mishra – yet fell short in every aspect.

It’s disheartening to see such immense talent involved in a project that can only be described as nonsensical. I find myself at a loss for words to further describe this film, as it clearly stands as one of the worst films of 2023. It’s a disappointing reminder that star power alone cannot elevate a poorly executed script.

Love Again

Priyanka Chopra, affectionately known as our ‘desi girl,’ has undeniably been a dominant force in the Indian film industry. However, her journey into Hollywood hasn’t mirrored the same level of success. To date, her Hollywood films have been consistently lackluster, at least for me!

I held high hopes for her latest venture, “Love Again,” but, unfortunately, it followed the same disappointing pattern. The film turned out to be dull and lacked clear direction, not to mention the underwhelming acting performances.

It’s a letdown, especially given Priyanka’s proven talent and versatility. This movie, regrettably, adds to the list of her less-than-stellar Hollywood endeavors.

No Hard Feelings

It’s a known fact that not every day can be a stellar one, and this rings true for Jennifer Lawrence, an Academy Award-winning actress, with her latest film choice.

It appears that she may not have anticipated the extent to which this movie would fall short, ultimately becoming one of the worst films of 2023.

Watching this movie felt like an endurance test – a torturous experience through and through. The performances, including that of Lawrence, failed to strike a chord or leave any lasting impression.

It’s a stark reminder that even the most talented actors can occasionally misjudge a project, resulting in a film that disappoints audiences!

U-Turn

U-Turn is a classic example of disorganized storytelling paired with bizarre attempts at suspense. It baffles me why this story was chosen to be remade in multiple languages, given its evident shortcomings. Clearly, it stands as one of the worst films of 2023.

Despite the presence of talented actors like Alaya F, Priyanshu Painyuli, and Manu Rishi, the movie was beyond redemption. Their performances, though commendable, couldn’t rescue this sinking ship. The narrative lacked both substance and depth, leaving me questioning the purpose and direction of the entire film.

Dhak Dhak

Female bikers are literally challenging the norms and making their mark in a domain historically dominated by male bikers.

Dhak Dhak aimed to capture this revolutionary spirit, focusing on a group of female riders venturing to Khardung La, the highest motorable road. The premise alone had immense potential.

However, despite boasting a star-studded cast including Ratna Pathak Shah, Dia Mirza, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Sanjana Sanghi, the film fell short of expectations. It lacked the depth and intensity required to do justice to its powerful theme.

The narrative struggled with pacing and clarity, resulting in a jumble of confusing subplots rather than a cohesive and compelling story. It isn’t very pleasant, as this film could have been a significant portrayal of women’s empowerment and adventure.

Murder Mystery 2

Imagine my surprise when I learned that Prajakta Koli had the opportunity to interview none other than Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, the lead actors of this particular film. To add to the allure, the Indian outfits were designed by the renowned Manish Malhotra. Yet, even with such promising elements, the film turned out to be a major letdown.

I had thoroughly enjoyed the first installment of the series and was eagerly anticipating the sequel. Unfortunately, my expectations were met with disappointment. The film lacked a storyline, and the narration was all over the place, resulting in numerous confusing scenes.

It was particularly disheartening because I admire both Sandler and Aniston. To see such talented actors in a film that failed to deliver a compelling narrative was truly disheartening.

1920: Horrors of the Heart

Horror movies have never been my cup of tea; they still manage to scare me, often leaving me with nightmares. But this particular film was a complete misfire. Far from being frightening, it was filled with unintentionally funny moments, accompanied by some of the worst VFX I’ve ever seen.

Vikram Bhatt, a filmmaker known for creating genuinely scary films, especially with some entries from the “1920” series, really missed the mark with this one. It’s a stark departure from his usual standard, landing it among the worst films of 2023.

The lack of genuine scares was so pronounced that even if this movie had been released back in 1920, I doubt it would have frightened anyone.

Heart of Stone

The moment finally arrived when Alia Bhatt, our exceptionally talented star, made her much-anticipated Hollywood debut. And let me tell you, it wasn’t just a fleeting appearance but a substantial, full-fledged role. True to her reputation, Alia delivered a stellar performance, proving her mettle on the international stage.

However, the film itself didn’t match up to the expectations set by its cast. While every actor, including Alia, did a fantastic job, the shortcomings lay in the direction and storytelling. The plot seemed rather generic, failing to bring anything new or exciting to the table.

Additionally, the AI storyline, which had the potential to be intriguing, ended up feeling superficial and underdeveloped. It’s a classic case where a film boasts of great performances but falls short in narrative substance and execution.

65

This film that was so silly it left me in stitches. The premise itself sounds like a far-fetched fantasy: a space pilot crash-landing on an unknown planet, only to discover its Earth overrun by dinosaurs. He then finds a girl who is the only other survivor, and together, they embark on a quest to escape the planet.

The whole concept was executed so poorly, and the storytelling was disjointed and lacked any real depth or logic. It’s one thing to create a science-fiction narrative, but it’s another to do so without any regard for plausibility.

This film was a glaring example of how not to do sci-fi – a mishmash of ideas thrown together without any meaningful structure or substance. Truly, it was a disappointing and bizarre cinematic experience.

Over to you…

Well, there you have it – my personal roundup of the worst films of 2023. I must say, enduring these cinematic misadventures deserves a self-congratulatory pat on the back. It was nothing short of a torturous journey, but I navigated it with as much grace as possible.

My aim here is to spare you the same ordeal. But if you’re still inclined to dive into these titles, I wish you all the best – you’re going to need it! May the cinematic gods be with you!
