Dear Diary,

Thanks to the digital world, we’re privileged to learn about many celebrities, one of whom was Amar Singh Chamkila. Honestly, I did not know of him, nor had I ever heard his name before. However, this film streaming on Netflix took me on a rollercoaster ride, showcasing the life of this legendary singer.

Amar Singh Chamkila – Premises of the Film

The movie revolves around the struggles, fame, and untimely death of singer Amar Singh Chamkila. His “vulgar” lyrics brought him fame across Punjab, but they also attracted the wrath of various societal groups. But he believed he must deliver what the audiences genuinely wanted. Hence, he never changed the course of his career. He continued with his “sleazy” lyrics.

Eventually, while riding high on success, he faced significant criticism before his untimely death. He, along with his second wife Amarjot and two band members, were assassinated in 1988 by unknown assailants, and their murders remain unresolved.

What Did I Like the Most?

Diljit, Diljit, and Diljit… Besides, after Jab Harry Met Sejal and Love Aaj Kal (starring Sara and Kartik), I had lost a bit of faith in Imtiaz Ali. I wondered how a director like him could produce such disappointing films. Then came Amar Singh Chamkila, and it felt like Imtiaz’s golden days of direction were back!

The movie is thoughtfully crafted, chronicling every significant moment of Amar Singh Chamkila’s life so intimately that you feel as if you are part of his journey. The performances by the cast are simply top-notch. Even the briefest roles leave a lasting impact on the film’s narrative.

The inclusion of clips featuring the real Amar Singh Chamkila piques curiosity and encourages viewers to learn more about him. The film beautifully depicts how each event in his life left a mark on the people of Punjab.

Additionally, the end credits are fascinating; they feature real-life photos of the characters alongside their family members, adding a layer of authenticity and emotional depth.

Direction: I strongly believe that no director could have done justice to a biography like Imtiaz Ali did with this film. He has masterfully captured the most intricate moments of the lead character’s life. Not once did I feel bored. Most importantly, Imtiaz and his team have beautifully established the connection between Chamkila’s lyrics and his life experiences.

Acting: What can I say about the acting? Every actor has delivered a fantastic performance. Of course, Diljit steals the show, and deservedly so. I believe he merits all the praise. After watching the movie, I viewed some clips of the real Chamkila and realized that Diljit mastered Chamkila’s body language aesthetically. Parineeti also performed well, although her role was quite brief.

Sound and Cinematography: It’s so refreshing to see the gulley and nukkad of 1980s Punjab captured on film. Moreover, the soundtrack is lively and peppy— and why not — it is by A.R. Rahman. Yes, I must admit, it took me some time to read the subtitles and understand the lyrics. Yet, the music is soothing to both the ears and the mind.

What I Didn’t Like About the Movie?

There isn’t much to complain about. However, I felt that Parineeti’s role could have been more prominent. Despite being a close aide and, most importantly, his wife, she doesn’t really stand out. Additionally, it took me some time to read the subtitles and understand the lyrics, which was an effort, but I’m not complaining.

Over To You…

Well, that wraps up my review of Amar Singh Chamkila. I wholeheartedly urge everyone to watch it. This film is more than just a biography—it’s a deep dive into a compelling story, still shrouded in mystery. Who could have shot him? It’s so tragic that this case remains unresolved.

Moreover, just like me, I’m sure you’ll be captivated by the unique storytelling style—pure Imtiaz Ali magic—coupled with outstanding performances. This movie does an excellent job of highlighting the life stories of some forgotten figures. Don’t miss out on this extraordinary cinematic journey.

Dear Diary,

Some movies compel you to go to the theater. Otherwise, we’re content to lounge on our sofas, watching movies on OTT platforms. Dune Part Two was one such movie that I just had to see in the theater. And wow, what a film! Absolutely brilliant. If you watched and loved Dune Part One, I’m sure you’ll be thrilled with this sequel!

What Is the Basic Plot of Dune Part Two?

If you’ve seen the first installment of Dune, I’m sure you’re eagerly anticipating the sequel. Dune Part Two picks up exactly where the first part left off. This time, we see Paul Atreides, played by the talented Timothée Chalamet, forging an alliance with the Fremen on the desert planet of Arrakis.

Together, they take a stand against the malevolent House Harkonnen. Paul isn’t just an outsider now; he’s fully integrated into the Fremen army, leading daring raids against the Harkonnen’s illegal spice operations.

But the burning question remains: Is he the prophesied savior? It would be best if you witnessed the unfolding events for yourself. Trust me, it’s a cinematic experience you won’t want to miss!

What Did I Like About the Movie?

The movie is an absolute delight. If you’re a fan eagerly awaiting its release on OTT platforms, let me urge you to reconsider. Don’t waste any more time; make your way to the cinema now.

Dune Part Two is a spectacle that truly deserves to be experienced in theaters, not just on a small screen at home. Trust me, the cinematic experience elevates this film to a whole new level!

Storyline: Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, Dune Part Two doesn’t disappoint when it comes to storytelling. It’s astonishingly gripping, drawing you in from the very start. No matter how brief their appearance, each character serves a meaningful purpose in the film.

The story is full of mind-blowing twists that will leave you captivated. Some moments will make you exclaim, ‘Oh my God! What an enthralling twist!’ The narrative craftsmanship in this film is truly exceptional.

Direction: Denis Villeneuve’s direction in Dune Part Two is nothing short of phenomenal. Each frame is a visual masterpiece, a feast for the eyes.

Villeneuve masterfully balances the pacing, seamlessly weaving together thrilling action sequences and engaging dialogue. His skillful direction ensures that every moment of the film is captivating, maintaining a perfect rhythm that enthralls the audience.

Acting: What can I frankly say about the acting in this film? It’s nothing short of outstanding. The cast, featuring Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, Javier Bardem, and others, have delivered performances that are nothing less than fantastic.

The on-screen chemistry between Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet is mesmerizing, capturing all my admiration. However, a special mention must go to Rebecca Ferguson. Her portrayal of the Reverend Mother is simply breathtaking.

She brings a depth to her character that can sometimes be intimidating, yet this intensity is the essence of her role. Her performance is a standout in a film filled with exceptional acting.

Sound and Cinematography: A key element that holds the audience spellbound in Dune Part Two is its background score. It’s simply outstanding, with each tune crafted to perfection, sending chills down your spine. The cinematography is equally magnificent.

The depiction of the desert landscape, particularly the awe-inspiring sandworms, is breathtaking. The visual storytelling is so vivid and captivating that you’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat, feeling every pulse of the narrative. The synergy of sound and visuals in this film is a masterclass in cinematic art, creating an adrenaline-fueled experience that’s absolutely unforgettable.

In addition to the sound and cinematography, the costume and set design in Dune Part Two are truly enthralling. They surpass all expectations, immersing you completely in the film’s universe. The attention to detail in every costume and the intricate set design contribute to an incredibly authentic feel.

It’s as if these places and characters exist on some distant, exotic planet. The creativity and artistry behind these designs play a crucial role in bringing the world of ‘Dune’ to life, making it a visually stunning and believable experience.

Action Sequences: The action sequences in Dune Part Two are equally astonishing and a highlight of the film. From intense one-on-one combat to grand-scale war scenes, everything is executed with such realism that it’s utterly breathtaking.

The choreography of each fight and the depiction of battle scenarios are so immersive and well-crafted that they’re guaranteed to give you goosebumps. These sequences are a testament to the film’s commitment to creating a visceral and authentic cinematic experience.

What I Didn’t Like About the Movie?

Honestly, I have nothing but praise for this film – it’s that superb. In fact, I’m already eagerly awaiting the sequel. The anticipation of what happens next in this captivating story is almost too much to bear. I really can’t wait to see where they take us in the next chapter of this incredible saga!

Over To You…

Well, that wraps up my review of Dune Part Two. I wholeheartedly urge everyone to watch it. This film is more than just a cinematic experience; it’s a journey to a different world.

Besides, you’ll be immersed in a unique storytelling style underpinned by stellar direction and outstanding acting. It’s not just a movie; it’s an adventure that reshapes how we perceive epic storytelling. Don’t miss out on this extraordinary cinematic journey.

Dear Diary,

Certain films embed themselves in our minds, leaving a lasting impact. The ‘Wake Up Sid’ film is one such cinematic gem that has remained deeply etched in my heart. This movie, I believe, captured the essence of urban youth with a unique fervor.

Helmed by Ayan Mukerji and starring the talented Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma, ‘Wake Up Sid’ film transcended the usual boundaries of Bollywood storytelling. It offered viewers a fresh and relatable perspective on life, ambition, and the journey of self-discovery.

Even 15 years after its release, I find myself drawn to ‘Wake Up Sid’ with the same level of enthusiasm as when I first watched it. So, what exactly makes this film stand out so remarkably?

Why Wake Up Sid Film Stands Out?

A very simple yet unique story

‘Wake Up Sid‘ film was a trailblazer in many respects. It broke away from the quintessential Bollywood formula of romance and mindless action, opting instead for a narrative that centered on the internal journey of its protagonist, Siddharth Mehra, brilliantly portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor.

In our youth, there comes a point where confusion reigns, and paths seem unclear. Some find guidance, while others lose their way. This film beautifully captures that very essence.

Its portrayal of young adults grappling with personal aspirations against the backdrop of familial expectations resonated deeply with many viewers. It marked a significant shift in the kind of stories Bollywood traditionally told.

I am very sure that many viewers found a piece of themselves in ‘Wake Up Sid’ film. It spoke to the dilemma faced by so many of us – being tethered to parental expectations, often at the cost of our own dreams. This film not only depicted this struggle but also brought to light the importance of finding one’s own path in life.

It created a major impact on unique storytelling and filmmaking

The ‘Wake Up Sid’ film ignited a trend in Bollywood, shifting the focus to storytelling that embraced more realistic and relatable characters, as well as life situations that resonated with audiences.

Its narrative style, a masterful blend of light-hearted moments and profound emotional depth, set a new standard and became a source of inspiration for many contemporary filmmakers.

I still hold the belief that the nuances of this film were captured so aptly that it felt like a narration of my own story – a sentiment I believe many young people can relate to. ‘Wake Up Sid’ didn’t just tell a story; it mirrored the experiences and emotions. In fact, it is a rite of passage for much of the youth, making it a timeless piece in Indian cinema.

Most importantly, we got to experience the most unusual jodi – Konkana-Ranbir. Unconventional yet the cutest in the history of Hindi Film Industry.

Challenges of the affluent class

When we think of narratives from middle-class or financially deprived families, the stories often revolve around struggles and hardships. There’s a common perception that those from the upper-class lead fulfilled lives simply due to their financial stability and established businesses. However, the ‘Wake Up Sid’ film challenges this notion, shedding light on the complexities of life even amid affluence.

The film delves into the theme of self-exploration but is uniquely set against an urban, affluent backdrop. Siddharth Mehra, or Sid, the protagonist, comes from a family with a successful business. He enjoys privileges like having credit cards at his disposal and the option to buy any car he desires – luxuries not afforded to everyone.

Yet, his father’s insistence on him becoming independent and self-sufficient highlights a different kind of challenge. Despite all the material wealth, there’s a pressing need for him to carve out his own identity and path in life.

This narrative brings to light an important realization: Modern and affluent youth, too, face their own unique set of challenges. These challenges might be different from those experienced by other social classes, and they are often overlooked or underappreciated.

‘Wake Up Sid’ film invites us to broaden our understanding and acknowledge that struggles and the journey of self-discovery are not confined to any one class.

Memorable characters and their realistic performances

The success of the ‘Wake Up Sid’ film owes much to the remarkable performances of Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma. Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Sid’s transformation from a carefree and aimless youth to a responsible individual is not just convincing but truly mind-blowing. His journey in the film resonates with anyone who has struggled to find direction in life.

Konkona Sen Sharma, as Aisha, an ambitious writer making her way in Mumbai, brings a level of nuance and depth that is both powerful and touching. Her portrayal of Aisha is filled with profoundly relatable moments.

For instance, the scene where she lovingly smells her new books captures a simple yet universal joy for many book lovers. I find myself deeply connected to this gesture, as I cherish the same ritual with my books.

Additionally, Aisha’s cautious demeanor around Sid, stemming from her desire not to send any unintended signals, adds layers to her character. It’s a subtle yet significant portrayal of the complexities often involved in new friendships and relationships, particularly from a woman’s perspective in a modern urban setting.

These finely crafted performances make the characters of Sid and Aisha not just memorable but incredibly relatable, contributing significantly to the film’s enduring appeal.

Every job is equal, but you need to be passionate about it

Numerous times, I found myself engulfed in confusion about my career path. However, once I embraced writing, I committed to it wholeheartedly, pouring my heart and soul into every word. This personal journey resonates deeply with Siddharth Mehra’s (Sid’s) story in the ‘Wake Up Sid’ film.

Sid, much like many of us, knew that following in his father’s footsteps and running the family business wasn’t meant for him. Yet, he was initially unaware of his own strengths and passions. His journey of self-discovery, particularly in the realm of photography, is beautifully portrayed in the film.

Sid’s realization that photography was his true calling and his decision to pursue it with all his heart is a pivotal moment in the film. Every photograph he takes in the film tells a story, illustrating the idea that no job is too small or insignificant. What matters is the dedication and love one puts into their work.

Sid’s journey in ‘Wake Up Sid’ is a testament to the fact that finding one’s passion can often be a beacon of light in the confusing journey of career and self-discovery. His experience serves as an inspiring reminder that once we find our path, embracing it wholeheartedly can lead to fulfilling and meaningful achievements.

Every character adds depth to the film

It’s easy to initially perceive the roles of Shikha Talsania, Anupam Kher, Rahul Khanna, Supriya Pathak, Kainaz Motivala, and Namit Das in ‘Wake Up Sid’ as mere special appearances. However, this assumption couldn’t be further from the truth. Each of these actors plays a pivotal role, adding substantial depth and dimension to the story.

Take, for instance, Namit Das’s portrayal of Rishi, grappling with the heartache of failed love, or Shikha Talsania’s character, Laxmi, who brings to light the issue of body image and self-acceptance. Then there’s Supriya Pathak as Sarita Mehra, who earnestly tries to learn English and connect with her son in a modern, evolving world.

These characters are not just background figures; they are integral to the narrative, each with their own struggles and aspirations that enhance the film’s plot. Their individual stories and the way they intertwine with Sid’s journey contribute to the rich tapestry of ‘Wake Up Sid,’ making it more than just a coming-of-age film.

It’s a reflection of the diverse, often unseen struggles of everyday life, brought to the screen with sensitivity and realism. Each actor, no matter the size of their role, adds a unique layer to the film, creating a more immersive and relatable experience for the audience.

Over to you…

Fifteen years on, the ‘Wake Up Sid’ film continues to captivate audiences across generations and cultures. Amid worst films, this film is a ray of positivity for me. Its portrayal of the trials and triumphs of young adulthood remains as relevant and inspiring today as it was at its release.

The film is much more than a mere cinematic experience; it is a reflection of a society in flux and the evolving aspirations of Indian youth. Truly, this film stands tall as a testament to the power of cinema to capture the zeitgeist of an era, significantly influencing the narrative fabric of Bollywood.

Its continued relevance and appeal underscore the film’s insightful exploration of life’s complexities. The ‘Wake Up Sid’ film, with its nuanced storytelling and authentic characters, continues to be a beacon for those navigating the journey of self-discovery and adulthood.

Dear Diary,

Sometimes, we judge movies solely based on their star cast and posters. I’ll admit, after watching “Mumbaikar,” I had my doubts about Vikrant Massey’s film choices. However, I now find myself feeling utterly guilty for not trusting this incredible actor. In fact, it inspired me to write a thoughtful piece about his outstanding performance in the “12th Fail” movie.

What’s truly remarkable is that “12th Fail” has become one of the highest-rated films on IMDb, even surpassing “Oppenheimer.” Isn’t that incredible? It deepens my guilt even further.

But enough about my guilt. Let’s dive into the heart of the matter – the life lessons I’ve gleaned from the “12th Fail” movie.

12th Fail Movie – Valuable Lessons I’ve Taken to Heart

Before I delve into the lessons learned, let me offer a brief introduction to the film’s team and storyline. ’12th Fail’ is inspired by the real-life journey of IPS Officer Manoj Kumar Sharma and his wife, IRS official Shraddha Joshi. The film is penned and directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, based on Anurag Pathak’s non-fiction book.

This powerful movie narrates the hardships endured by Manoj, brilliantly portrayed by Vikrant, as he strives to become an IPS officer while living in dire poverty. So, without further ado, let’s embark on this enlightening journey.

Success isn’t served on a platter

When you encounter a successful individual, don’t assume they had an easy ride. While it’s true that some have things handed to them, not all people are lucky.

Many, like Manoj, endure significant struggles on their path to success. What sets them apart is their unwavering commitment to hard work. Manoj’s story underscores the importance of not taking shortcuts but instead putting in consistent, dedicated effort.

The unwavering ‘never give up’ spirit

In the face of repeated failures, many of us contemplate throwing in the towel. I’ve experienced it myself; after a few attempts, I’ve thought, “I don’t want to do this anymore.”

However, for Manoj, there was no room for anything but hard work. What kept him going? His unwavering focus on becoming an IPS Officer, a dream he clung to without wavering, not even once.

Embrace the lessons in failure

Throughout his educational journey, Manoj encountered numerous setbacks, with failures seemingly greeting him at every turn. But he didn’t surrender. Instead, he chose to learn from his mistakes. He used each setback as an opportunity to evolve and improve.

How many of us can claim the same? Often, we dwell on our mistakes, allowing them to consume us with sorrow and despair instead of using them as stepping stones for growth.

The power of patience

Manoj’s journey plunged him into extreme poverty. He took on jobs like cleaning toilets and working in a library, all while residing in a cramped room with a dim light and the constant noise of an “atta-chakka” (flour mill). Through it all, he held onto his patience.

Despite facing criticism and relentless attempts to hold him back, Manoj confronted every obstacle with remarkable patience and unwavering determination. The movie serves as a reminder that patience can pave the way for your dreams to come true.

Gratitude knows no bounds

Shraddha played a crucial role in Manoj’s life, but it wasn’t just her—his friends Gauri Bhaiya (played by Anshumaan Pushkar) also provided essential support, offering him the space and comfort needed to pursue his dream.

However, one person stood out as a pivotal influence in his journey—DSP Dushyant Singh, portrayed by Priyanshu Chatterjee.

Remarkably, when Manoj achieved his dream of becoming an IPS officer, he sought out and expressed gratitude to all these individuals, including a friend who had once harbored ill intentions and attempted to derail his path. This highlights Manoj’s unwavering appreciation for those who aided him along the way.

Holding firm to ethics

It’s not always easy to stand by our ethics, but Manoj did so unwaveringly. He inherited his strong sense of ethics from his father, who had tirelessly fought for his rights.

Despite facing challenges and individuals attempting to undermine him, Manoj never compromised his ethical principles. He never resorted to unethical means to chase his dreams. His portrayal in the “12th Fail” movie imparts a crucial life lesson: always prioritize ethics.

The power of “RESTART”

I won’t give away the details, but “RESTART” is a mantra you’ll have to discover by watching the film. My words won’t do justice to the significance of this term.

Over to you…

After watching the film, I came to realize what a true gem it is. This is my perspective on the “12th Fail” movie, and I’m aware that others may hold different opinions.

Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below. While I may not be able to practice every life lesson, I’ve made a promise to myself to give my best effort.

Dear Diary,

So, in the quiet hours of the evening, I’ve decided to jot down my personal list of the best Tom Hanks movies, the ones that have touched my heart and sparked my imagination.

Because, there’s something undeniably heartwarming about settling down with a bowl of popcorn and diving into the cinematic world of Tom Hanks. As I watched “Forrest Gump” for what must be the hundredth time tonight, I couldn’t help but reflect on the amazing range of characters Tom has brought to life over the years.

My Personal Favourite and Best Tom Hanks Movies

Forrest Gump

This one had to be the first on the list on best Tom Hanks movies. Where else to start but with the film with Hanks delivering the iconic line, “Life is like a box of chocolates”?

Playing the endearingly naive Forrest, Hanks gave us a character whose journey through pivotal moments in American history is both profound and uplifting. His Academy Award-winning performance is as sweet as it is poignant.

Cast Away

Isolation and survival took on a new meaning as I watched Hanks transform into Chuck Noland, a man stranded on a deserted island. I thought it was just another survival story, but Tom Hanks’ acting becomes intense as the story unfolds. It’s a tour-de-force performance that showcases Hanks’ ability to captivate audiences with minimal dialogue, commanding the screen with just his physicality and raw emotion.

A Man Called Otto

In this touching story, Hanks plays Otto, a grumpy widower whose heart eventually opens to life’s possibilities through unlikely friendships. This is the first film where I have seen Hanks grumpier than ever!

It’s a newer role, but Hanks’s performance is as endearing and nuanced as ever, reminding us of the power of connection. If you are going to watch this film, have a box of tissues beside you. You are definitely going to need it; TRUST ME!

News of the World

This movie did not have great reviews on IMDB, but it was Hank’s film, and I had to watch it. And believe me, I loved me. I might be partial, but I genuinely loved the film. Watching Hanks, as a Civil War veteran, take a young girl across treacherous terrain to her rightful home was both intense and heartwarming.

His embodiment of a man driven by honor and haunted by the past added depth to an already gripping storyline. Every frame with both the child and Hanks in it is just endearing like never before.

The Circle

Imagine Hanks and Emma Watson in one film. What a power-packed film, isn’t it? That’s exactly what I felt. For the first time, I have seen Hanks in a negative light!

But believe me, this was an intriguing departure from Hanks’s more heroic roles, diving into the complexities of privacy in the digital age. His portrayal of the charismatic tech giant leader provided a chilling look at the potential dark sides of technology.

The Da Vinci Code

There are so many controversies around this film, but Hanks’s portrayal of Robert Langdon hooked me, solving historical riddles and conspiracies. His intellectual vigor and subtle suspense kept me on the edge of my seat throughout this thrilling adaptation. This film and the entire series – Angels and Demons and Inferno have all my attention.

The way Tom Hanks has portrayed Langdon, I am sure no one could do it! It looks so realistic as he solves the mystery.

Captain Phillips

I was never aware of the challenges faced by marine engineers. But this movie proved to be an eye-opener. The intense portrayal of the real-life hijacking of the Maersk Alabama was made all the more palpable by Hanks’s performance.

His raw, emotional depth during the infamous rescue scene is unforgettable. Not just this, but even the last scene after the rescue will surely give you goosebumps.

The Terminal

What happens when you are trapped in an airport and have nowhere to go? You will be left confused, right? On top of it, your country is at war, and you can’t go back, thus worsening the situation.

However, Hanks’s role as Viktor Navorski, trapped in an airport due to a geopolitical crisis, was a blend of comedy and drama. Every moment showcased in the film is a breeze of fresh air. The film beautifully showcased his remarkable ability to elicit empathy for his characters.

Catch Me If You Can

Imagine two amazing stalwarts in one frame. Yes, “Catch Me If You Can” is a one-of-a-kind film where the characters do not overshadow each other but complement each other.

The cat-and-mouse game between Hanks’s character, FBI Agent Hanratty, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Frank Abagnale was a delight. The balance of wit and determination Hanks brought to the role was a perfect counterbalance to DiCaprio’s charming deceiver.

On a parting note…

As I pen down these thoughts in my diary, I’m moved by how Tom Hanks brings every character to life with such authenticity and heart. He’s not just portraying roles; he’s lending a piece of himself to each story, creating a legacy that continues to inspire and entertain. His films, ranging from stories of survival and hope to tales of wonder and adventure, are the kind that stays with you long after the credits roll.
